We arrived at the bustling convention center, a cacophony of colors, sounds, and costumes. People of all ages and sizes milled about, dressed as their favorite characters from comics, movies, and games. As we made our way to the registration booth, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of envy for those who were here purely for the love of cosplay and not for some twisted bet.

The line for the cosplay competition was long, filled with contestants eager to show off their craftsmanship and creativity. My mother chatted away, oblivious to the darker motives behind our participation. I watched her, feeling a mix of love and guilt, as she excitedly talked about her costume and the character she was portraying. She got really into Chun-Li and everything about her. It was a stark contrast to the fear and humiliation that had consumed me during my own "training."

As we waited, my stepfather leaned in close, his hand sliding up my thigh. "Remember what's at stake here," he murmured, his grip tightening. "Make sure she gives them a real show."
