Nurse Lilly brought the breakfast for the both girls
As Alice spoke, Nurse Lilly appeared at our table, a warm smile on her face and a tray of steaming oatmeal in her hands. "Good morning, girls!" she chimed, setting a bowl of oatmeal in front of Alice, who looked at it warily. "I brought extra fruit for your friend, dear," she added, winking at Alice as she placed a small bowl of sliced strawberries and bananas next to her oatmeal. Alice's eyes flicked to the fruit, and for a moment, I thought I saw a glimmer of hope in her expression.
Nurse Lilly then turned to me, her smile never faltering.
Nurse Lilly's smile never faltered as she reached for the spoon on my tray and dipped it into the oatmeal. "Now, dearie, let's get you fed," she cooed, holding the spoon up to my lips. I took a deep breath and opened my mouth, feeling the warm, comforting texture of the oatmeal fill my mouth. I chewed slowly, savoring the flavor, and swallowed, feeling a sense of normalcy wash over me.
Alice, on the other hand, seemed to have given up on any semblance of dignity. She leaned forward, her face inches from her plate, and began to slurp up the oatmeal like an animal.
As we finished our oatmeal, Alice suddenly looked up, a hint of panic in her eyes. "I'm so sorry," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the din of the cafeteria. "I don't know what's wrong with me. I didn't mean to...to eat like that." She glanced down at her empty bowl, a look of horror crossing her face as she took in the sight of the spoon lying in the oatmeal-splattered mess. Her eyes darted back to mine, filled with a mixture of embarrassment and concern. "I feel like I'm...losing control or something," she whispered, her voice cracking.
