Chapter 2 by croland croland

Who has the stickers?

A pair of nearly broke roommates (both women)

"We've got to try these out." Amanda said her pupils wide as she stared down at the stack of bright red stickers.

"Do we really? Seriously I've just gotten off a ten-hour shift at the diner because Asher was fucking late again." Julia said with a whine. "Besides, I can't believe you spent fifty whole dollars on those things. That was your share of the grocery money for the week, and I can't have instant-ramen more than one night in a row, it makes my tummy hurt."

"But they're magic stickers. Come on actual magic. They were a steal for that price. Come on, we didn't even have to sell our souls or anything. We just bought them at..." Amanda said, then trailed off.

Where had she bought them from.

"Wait where did I buy these from? Do you remember?" Amanda said, a look of worry on her face.

Julia shrugged. They lived in Columbia Heights, and there were a bunch of little stores that sold all kinds of things in their neighborhood. Though neither of them were native to Washington, D.C., they both had an interest in working in politics, and had gone to college together. Neither had made much progress towards their goals. Julia was a waitress at a local diner while she studied for the LSATs, and Amanda had an internship with a political consulting firm that paid barely any money. That's why they lived in this cramped two-bedroom apartment. They tried to pool money when they good, but Julia was always annoyed when Amanda would buy some weird impulse purchase.

Usually though it was just a weird-looking fridge magnet, or a face cream, or crystals.

"I don't remember. Maybe you got them on 14th Street NW when we were went to that container-free store?" Julia said. "Why does it matter."

"Because... Well... I mean it should right? We both agree these are magic stickers. I feel like we should want to know more about them." Amanda said.

"Of course they're magic, but maybe that's why we don't remember or care about remembering. That's not the issue though, the issue is that you need to find a way to contribute this month." Julia said.

Amanda's face soured. Julia was one of her closest friends, but the woman could be so close minded. Julia always judged her for going to acupuncture, and her books written by shamans, or anything else she saw as 'silly'. Amanda was a free-spirit, but Julia had that same almost pathological focus as all the dudebros frat guys in their poli-sci classes. At least she wasn't as douchey as them. But still her lack of imagination could be frustrating at times like this.

"You just need to see the possibilities. Let me show you!" Amanda said as she quickly scribbled something on a sticker and tore it off the stack.

"Wait hold on a second!" Julia said, a pang of worry shooting up her spine as she watched.

But it was too late.

Amanda was already placing the sticker right above her heart.

What did Amanda write on it?
