She hadn’t planned on revealing everything so early in their relationship, and had hoped to ingratiate James further to her to ensure his obedience. The proverbial wrench in her plans was the revelation that Cerena, the hellhound, had given James about the potential origins of his powers. When he came to her asking questions and looking distraught, she felt compelled to help him with the answers. She hated to admit it, but she found herself abnormally attached to him in the past few months.

His visits had been frequent, he kept his word to her, and he even held fast to defend her when he revealed their relationship to Abby. She was rightfully concerned, but there was James proclaiming his trust and love for her. It made her feel emotions she was unaccustomed to. She was a stranger to love. Devils had many of the emotions that humans did. They felt joy, anger, sadness, and desire. What was rare amongst them was the feeling she felt stirring in her now. Revealing his suspected identity to him did nothing to help her plans to bear children as the wife of a lord of hell, but for once she felt that another person’s needs were more important than her ambitions. The feeling of love felt equal parts alien and…thrilling.

Now that the contract was in motion, it would have been difficult to hide the changes he would soon experience anyway, she reasoned. She hadn’t lied about him being himself, but she hadn’t been forthcoming about what this pact would help unleash within his body. If the Empress of Desire’s entanglement with him had been the catalyst to get his metamorphosis ready, then their devil contract would push it forward exponentially.

It was imperative that the new Lord Asmodeus was strong and ready for what would surely come next.
