I doze, caught within ennui. This frozen state drives me mad: I feel I could sleep if only my eyes were allowed to close. Instead I see, without seeing, the dreams I wish to dream. Somewhere in this state, the words and their truth change, jolting me "awake."

What changed? What was it? What words? Why do I bother searching anymore? I've not been able to recollect the difference before, and I still don't now. I sigh, forlorn. Truly, I am a hopeless woman. It is only the Princess' desperation which saw her invite a washed- up dancer like myself to her quarters.

I put on the best show I could, naturally, and she - then her paramour - enjoyed it all the same. Skill does not always fade, even if the spirit loses its vigor. But the spark of my youth - the confidence of my past - it has long since faded.

I'm, simply put, far too large. Too heavy. Too sluggish. There is an appeal to a body like mine in various circles, certainly, but equally it makes the maneuvers demanded by my performance more difficult. In many cases, impossible.

And at the level demanded of the court... well. I am a laughing stock.

That is the worst of this mirror: How it leaves me to stew in my thoughts. I feel my head's been turned every which way in this eternal moment, desperate as I am to avoid drowning in this static haze. I'm not even sure I know how 'clarity' feels anymore. I'm not sure I care.
