Chapter 13 by Tippelnd2

Go to sleep?

Talk to your guard first.

You knock on the wooden door. Moments after, it opens a bit, the face of the blonde guard peaking through. "Yes, good sir?"

"I ... just wanted to talk a little." This might be your chance to get some explanations about the world you have been transported into. Besides, the guard seems to be a rather pleasant person, you wouldn't mind getting to know better as well. "I haven't asked for your name yet."

Your guard seems a little surprised. "Alhild is my name. Not that it matters though, good sir."

"Why shouldn't it?", you say and for the brink of a moment a smile flashes over her face. "I wanted to ask you something?"

"Yes?"

"Well, I'm just curious ... you know, out in the streets, and on the road, and the guard as well, it's mostly women. Why is that so?"

A long awkward pause ensues. She looks at you, as if she doesn't understand what you're saying.

"I mean, is there a particular reason?", you hurry to explain. "You know that I come from afar and know about this land's customs and history. Do most men live elsewhere? Has some strange plague killed off their majority? A war? An Amazonian uprising?"

Alhild looks at you with growing amusement. "You really do come from afar." Her smile spreads onto you, and you both chuckle for a moment, until she remembers she is speaking to a lord. "Well, good sir, it is neither custom nor history, just ... nature. Maybe you hail from a different kind of people, but when one of our women gives birth, it is only natural that most offsprings are female. We have this children's rhyme: One, two, three, four, in their lap a door; then comes the five, will make them their wife."

You ponder for a moment if she is joking with you? Can this possible be? Has evolution played a curious trick in this world? But it would indeed explain some things. Not just the she-soldiers, but also the farm girls, who have never even seen a men. This brings you to another thought.

"When there are so few men here, doesn't this leave a lot of women without a husband?" A situation, which would certainly be sad for them, but definitely allow more options for representatives of your sex.

"Well, in our lands not every woman wishes as husband, good sir. But also, it is not unusual that a man has more than one wife."

This is getting better and better, so you decide to get daring. "You say not every woman is made for marrying a man. Sure, not everyone wants to bear children or create a household together, but ... marriage has other advantages as well."

She tilts her head.

"I mean, quenching certain thirstes."

"You speak of sex, good sir?"

This time, her directness surprises you. "Uh ... yeah."

She smiles. "Well, us women certainly know ways to handle our lust alone. Or which each other. But of course, few would say no to laying with a man from time to time."

What do you say?
