With the boring stuff as she called it out of the way, they moved on to buy clothes, lots of them. They bought jeans, t-shirts, casual shirts, trousers, shoes, several pairs of trainers, underwear, two winter coats and a couple of smart three-piece dress suits, complete with a range of shirts, ties and smart shoes. Most of it was designer gear that Jessica had picked out. They were so laden down with stuff that three times they had to return to the car and drop their bags off before heading back out into the mall. By the time they were finished James’ head was spinning.

“God that was fun,” she said in the car on the way home.

“It was fun, but tiring too.”

“I know, shopping can be hard work.”

He was going through the receipts and then tapping on the new phone she’d bought him.

“What are you doing?”

“Keeping track of what you’ve spent on me. I’m putting it all in a spreadsheet so I know how much I have to pay you back.”

“James, that’s not necessary, today’s shopping was a gift from me. You can keep track of the money I send you though if you like.”

“No. I’m drawing the line. Buy me things if you want, send me money if you want, but I’m paying you back every penny. You called it pride, well yeah, I’ve got some pride, not much, but what I’ve got I’m keeping.”
