Rachel Reassures Me

"He has to go," I say first, the moment we're out of earshot, hissing my words at Rachel with a plea of desperation in my voice.

"Jake?" she asks, "I thought things were going well with him? I thought you were having fun?"

"Not Jake," I snap, "Blake. He has to go."

"Why?" she cocks her head, not understanding.

And there is no way I can tell her. Rachel doesn't know the lengths I've gone with him and she has no idea about the history we have together. As far as she's concerned there is no way I can even have any history with a man I only met yesterday and she would be shocked and no doubt enthralled by the news of what we'd already done together.

Which is why she can't know.

Rachel would look at it as an opportunity. A wrinkle in her plan, no doubt, but one that was welcome. Toss me in between two guys and check off threesome on her list of 'educational experiences' that she had in mind for me to learn about. She couldn't know.

"I don't..." I stammer, coming up with an excuse on the fly, "I don't like the way he just invited himself in here. The guy just strikes me as a bit cocky and he gets my back up, has since he caught me in that trust fall. I don't know. I can't get a read on him and I don't trust him, fall or no."

She giggles a little, "Blake? He's harmless. A bit of a cocky asshole but fun, no doubt. He's not going to cause any harm, believe me I can tell the ones who will and he's not one of them."

I raise an eyebrow at her, all of a sudden doubting her abilities entirely.

"And if it's him being presumptuous that's got your back up," she goes on, "Well then you don't need to worry about that at all. Blake didn't just invite himself in, I invited him."

"You did?" I say, incredulous.

She shrugs, "Yeah. I mean you've got your date. Why shouldn't I have mine?"

I blink, not understanding. Clearly not understanding what is happening here until the last few pieces fit in together and my jaw drops.

Rachel raises her eyebrows at me and fixes me with a withering glare, "You don't get to judge who I find hot, little Ms. conventionally attracted to a jock."

"Blake is here for you?" I ask, just to be certain.

She shrugs, "He's hot and he looks like he has a nice cock. I know I said all that stuff about Eddie but sometimes a girl just wants a simple bit of fun. Popcorn, you know?"

It is only because I'm stunned that I don't continue my protests and it's only because my brain is still trying to process things that I don't notice that she's turning me around and leading me back to the boys. Rachel bumps shoulders with me and smiles, leaning in as we look over at them.

"Come on, Em," she confides in me, "Look at them. Two hot guys for two lovely women. We've got a fun night under the stars planned for tonight with a shitty movie that neither of us will pay any attention to. Can you really tell me that doesn't sound like fun?"

If, and that's a big if, things go the way she says then yes, that does sound like fun. Jake is handsome and clearly into me and Blake isn't here for me.

And while I'm not thrilled, for reasons I can't quite pin down, about the idea of Blake turning his attentions on Rachel she was ultimately her own woman. I could lay no claim to her.

So maybe things could work out. Maybe things should work out.

I could see that happening.

It wouldn't be dangerous.

Right?
