Chapter 21
by Corruption
Lastly you had
Woodwork
Yeah, that was still a class taught in that school
You had done other electives in your last school, however they were not offered here.
Zack had the same issue with one of his electives, but replaced it with metalwork. Hearing that you picked a different one to avoid being with him. On the plus side, since you could not take your work home, he could not hide it. Well, you were meant to make some designs at home, but you just made simple stuff and so didn’t do that.
Putting your backpack away you put on the safety gear and got busy. Today you had been given a new project to do, making a chair.
Before you would have just done something simple, but that would not do now.
New Quest: Take a seat
You need to make furniture for woodworking class. In this case a chair.
Requirements
Make one (1) chair that has the following properties
4 legs
Backrest
Armrests
4 legs
Stable
Solid

Accept/Decline
Hell yeah you accepted! It would not only work here, but help improve your skills and go to another quest of yours!
You paid close attention during class, and realized you had to catch up with different things from the past year.
However, one thing you did from the start that the teacher, Mr. Belmor, did approve of was to not go straight for the wood, but start drawing your chair.
Things like how the armrests would fit into the backrest securely, the legs sticking out from the seat at slight angles for stability, and cross-bits for reinforcements were all things you would have to look into closer.
You also got a school chair and put wood on it until it was a comfortable height for sitting on, and then measured how high it was in order to determine the height of the chair you planned to make.
Seeing that the teacher chuckled and shook his head. He said to you “Smart idea. You were the only one who actually is designing the chair properly, and are making it suit you.”
You smile as you jot down the measurements. “Thank you. However, I know I have a lot to catch up with since I didn’t do this last year.”
He was surprised, as were the rest of the class who were not so discreetly listening in. “You didn’t? Then why are you here?”
“I chose web design and data admin, which are not electives here. Without having the prior year’s learning there were only 4 electives I could pick from. My step-brother is doing metal shop, so that’s out as I really don’t get on with him, and I don’t agree with Modern Society studies as it is inherently biased and often outdated by the time people learn of it. That just leaves Woodwork and Life Studies, which is basically how to live in the real world.”
The teacher frowned. “So all your work here was done without training?”
“Yes.”
Belmor thought for a bit, “There is a school club for people interested in wood working that I run for half an hour after school each Friday. It accepts people from both years 11 and 12. This soon into the year we are still covering the basics for the new members. Start attending tomorrow and I can help you there.”
“Thank you.”
“Oh, and since you have not been checked out for using the machines as you only started this year, I can’t allow you to use them until I test you on them. Hand tools are fine.”
“Is it ok if I stick to designing the chair and then practicing using the hand tools on the scrap wood here? Stuff like sawing off jagged edges, practicing hand sanding, plaining and other things.”
Belmor got a thoughtful look on his face. “Might as well. Heck, you might even get some of the wood usable.”
You nod to him and go back to your sketching.
You got a message
Achievement Unlocked: Changing views
You have started to get people to change their view of you from being just a slacker.
Rewards:
+10XP
+$5.00
+1 CHA
And this led to
Level up to level 3
Hmm, his MP and HP increased, but not by much (4 and 3). There had to be a catch he was missing out on.
You made the sketch as best as you could, and knew not to bother trying for highly detailed stuff. You needed only the basics. You also knew you would have to revise your sketch as you learned more.
Afterwards you went to the scrap wood pile and picked some of the wrecked wood there before returning to your work station and getting some hand tools.
While going around you gathered up some saw dust for your inventory; you had a use for it.
You started by sawing off the jagged ends as you had mentioned and putting them aside as rubbish. Then you used a claw hammer to remove nailed from some. You used a wide range of hand tools, but it was for a reason. You figured this would help you out.
At the end of class:
Achievement Unlocked: Overly skillful
You have managed to obtain an Overskill.
Some Skills are just too powerful on their own, or too broad in usage and abilities to be considered just a normal skill. These cost a lot of mana to use.
Mana costs and better results can be obtained via learning different subsections of it.
Nice try, but no way we were going to make it as easy for you as you hoped!
Rewards:
+2 XP
+$0.02
+1 WISNew Overskill: Craft (Overskill) Lvl 1 (30+ MP)
This Skill allows you to create, repair, upgrade, alter or dismantle items
Base usage is 30MP, and will may cost extra. If Skills that fall under the Craft Overskill are used instead, their MP is used. If different skills are used and you only have some, the MP amount can be lessened.
You will need to provide the materials, and probably some cash.New Skill: Woodwork LVL 1 (10 MP) (Craft)
You can make and dismantle simple wooden items.
All that was nice. No-one noticed that you took some of the wood that was now decent to use so you could use them for Crafting things.
The bell rung and you smiled; end of school.
Any afterschool activities?
