Chapter 3 by NemoHoes NemoHoes

What's next?

Tomorrow's Changes.

The Master PC program immediately disappeared and the spreadsheet Craig had been working on returned. Craig sat stunned for a moment. His mind was racing. If it wasn’t for the missing scar on his wrist and the strange new feeling between his legs, he would’ve been sure it was a dream. He laughed to himself for a second and then returned to his work.

Craig quietly opened the door to his small apartment. It was nearly eleven o’clock, his extra work had taken quite a lot longer than he thought. For the first time in a very long time, Craig was actually excited for what the future brought. He saw his wife sprawled out on the couch and noticed the empty bottles of Jack Daniels, and a huge portion of what looked to be a very cheap birthday cake on the coffee table.

‘Oh Jack…’ Craig murmured to himself, and moved to clean up the mess his wife made.

Jacqueline Richardson was the one good thing in Craig’s life, but she had always been troubled. Her mother had been abusive, and Jackie had found her ways of coping with the trauma. But it was a few years ago when her mother passed that Jackie really went off the rails. Copious amounts of **** and binge eating were destroying her life. Jackie was incredibly bright, having worked as a professor of English at a local university, but was let go when her drinking problem became too much.

Seeing her on the couch made Craig imagine a reality in which he could simply pick her up in his arms, but her habitual binge eating caused her to be quite overweight. He cleaned up some of the mess around her and pulled a blanket over his wife. He looked over Jackie, he hated to admit to himself how unattractive he found her. She was about five foot five with unkempt stringy dark brown hair. Jackie had Chilean heritage but had never actually been there herself.

Craig moved to the bedroom and saw his laptop already open on the desk. He began talking to Jane and asking more questions about his plans for the next changes

Craig awoke the next morning to the sound of vomiting in the bathroom next door. The hangovers had become frequent with Jackie. He had tried to talk to her about her problem a number of time but they mostly resulted in Jackie becoming distraught or angry with him so he had given up.

‘Need anything hun?’ He poked his head in the bathroom door while rubbing sleep out of his eye.

‘No… thanks sweetie.’ Jackie didn’t look up from the toilet bowl.

Craig immediately moved to his laptop to make some changes.

‘Okay. Like we talked about last night, Jane.’ He typed, ‘One change a day for the net two weeks going towards Jackie’s drinking problem. And the other change for the next two weeks to changing her diet to be healthy.’

His words blinked green.
