She makes them kneel on rice

"You two have acted very sinfully," she said, leading them to a dark room with a shrine of the Virgin Mary in its center. She took out a Ziploc bag of raw rice and poured it on the floor in front of the shrine. "Put your knees on this, then pray and ask God to forgive you."

The two knelt on the rice, which was quite painful, and started to clasp their hands as in prayer. Lacey, for her part, was at least grateful for the heating.

"I will be back in a little while to come get you. Once you are absolved, then we can start bringing you to your rooms."

Walkowicz left, leading mother and daughter to pray in their painful state. Minutes turned into tens of minutes, until Lacey got an idea.

"I wonder what Sam's doing," she asked her mother.

Joanne noticed that she still had her purse and phone. Breaking her prayer, she pulled her phone out of the bag and called Sam to ask her how her bag hunt was going.
