Chapter 173 by gorel29 gorel29

Stepping outside and looking out to the sight of the police arresting Two-Face’s minions, Damien heard his mother wince and moan out a complaint as they stepped out into the nightlight, where street lamps shun down their light into her face. Looking around with red eyes now able to focus after drinking enough blood to heal her injuries. Clutching at the cape over his shoulder, Talia felt like a child being cradled as Damien stepped out into the streets and made his way to the batmobile, the vehicle not worse for wear and waiting for the dark knight to depart.

“You saved me…”

“You saved me first.” Batman smirked, sitting her on the hood of the Batmobile and checking her over, hearing Koriand’r and Dick come to join them. The two joining Talia and embracing her when she smiled weakly and wrapped her arms around Nightwing’s waist to rest her head against his shoulder.

“My mother… When she was alive, would have never raised a finger to save my life. You aren’t her, not anymore. You’re someone else completely.” Seeing a police van arrive to take Harvey’s crew away, Damien made to approach Gordon now that he could take control of the situation. Locking eyes with Dick, Damien nodded back to him and Starfire. “Take care of her.”

Treading lightly with his cloak obscuring his entire body, Batman stood next to the grey-haired commissioner, the man looking over his shoulder to give the Dark Knight a look of relief as the robed men and women were cuffed and marched into the back of the van.

“Good work dealing with Harvey’s men, to think he was planning this for so long and we never knew about it.”

“You were checking for a criminal element planning to hurt the city, not a mob of angry families who lost everything to giant talking dogs.” Seeing one of the robed women sobbing as she was guided into the back of the police van, Batman retained his stoic visage. “What should they be expecting?”

“Well then, lets see… Murder, conspiracy to commit murder, armed aggravated assault…” Gordon listed off with each finger from his hand. “It’s a damned tragedy really.”

“They deserve the book to be thrown at them… But… Their reasons were understandable.”

“So are ALL crimes kid, doesn’t mean they get off easy. People could have been killed, and some were.” Scoffed Gordon, seeing the back of the van doors slam shut with two guards stepping inside to keep an eye on them. Slapping the palm of his hand against the door, the siren from the van blared off to tell everyone nearly to clear the road for the vehicle to leave.

“YOU CAN’T DO THAT!”

Turning their attention to the group of Krypto-Wolves staring down Dracula behind an apprehensive Bruce holding back either group.

“Tepes… Think this through VERY carefully.” Warned Bruce, his two mates flanking him as the krypto-wolves behind him looked down in shock at the stern glared of Dracula looking up at them, the gentle tug of Selina at his arm practically ignored as he repeated himself.

“The sky wolves you harbour had exploited what little trust I had in your kind Wolf King, that will not go unpunished.”

“So, you want to kill them all?!” Growled Aloe Vera, her hackles rising angrily.

“You’ve got a lot of nerve bucko!” Accused the white wolfess, pointing a finger back at the undead king. “Pee Gee’s done nothin wrong!”

“Her son took over her and her pack with a toxin and planned to assassinate you and your precious Wolf King. There was NO telling what his plans were after he would dare succeed. No. THIS is the sole reason I had made it my goal to wipe out the wolves in the first place.”

“The usurper has been dealt with King of Vampires.” Answered Bastet, approaching the group with her hands folded in front of her. The rest of her pack standing behind her as the spiders and serpents joined her. Lamia’s arm had nearly regrown, clutched in her good arm as it healed. “And these wolves do not deserve the fate you have for them.”

“You… You told him a prophecy; he boasted it in our duel. You encouraged the fool to take these steps.” Narrowing his eyes as they glowed a deep red, Dracula’s fist shook with impotent rage before the Egyptian goddess, slowly realising Selina was clutching at his arm to calm him.

“I merely told him what he needed to hear, what he WANTED to hear was his fault, not mine.” Looking to the devastation around her, the leader of the cat’s looked almost pleased with herself. “All went as it was meant to be.”

“Did that include Clark and Lois getting mind controlled?” Growled Karen, glaring down at the cat with glowing red eyes of her own.

“What?” Blinked the two Krypto-Wolves in confusion, looking over to Super Boy and Super Girl who were also at a loss for words. “We were mind controlled?”

“Damn right you were. You and Lois were acting like something out of the Stepford Wives, and it all started when Lois showed up to interview my son.” Crouching down to stare into the cat goddess’s eyes, Karen’s sneer barred her fangs and darted her ears back in a threatening posture. “There’s only two people in this city that can take a look see and scramble someone’s mind here… And Lamia is playing innocent.”

At that moment Umbra brandished his claws and growled at the threatening demeanor Power Girl was giving off, so were the other cats. For a brief moment the rest of the lycanthrope tribes stared back menacingly at the cat goddess. That is until Lamia spoke up.

“Let me see them. I can determine if the Goddess has played a hand in this plot.”

Darting her eyes with a growl towards the snake, Karen’s demeanor softened as she looked over her shoulder to Clark and Lois, the two making their way to the queen of serpents as she looped her coils in a way to stand as high as possible. With her hand now fully healed, she cupped Lois’s snout and brought her down to see into her eyes. A look of confusion appeared on her serpentine face, almost blinking and breaking eye contact just as she let the new krypto-wolf go. Processing what she had seen, she gestured for Superman to meet her next. Choosing to crouch to one knee, Clark looked deep into her ever shifting eyes, like staring into a kaleidoscope until he sat still and oblivious. When she had seen enough, she pulled away, and Clark blinked his eyes and looked around, not realising minutes had passed.

“No, it was not Bastet either.” Explained the serpent, looking down at her healed arm, closing and opening her new hand to get a feel for it. “I could SEE her in their minds, but the memory of her was blocked to them. She… Played with them. Humiliated them. Made a spectacle of the blue and red one and the woman he loved.”

“Oh GOD Clark, the things she…” Beside herself, Lois pressed up against Clark for support, immediately hugging him with her four arms, crying as Clark held her, his lupine face visibly shaken. “I’m SO sorry for everything she made us do.”

“Who was it, Lois?” Asked Bruce. “Who did this to you?”

“It was…”

A cry from the crowd nearby alerted everyone over to the heart of the festival. The police stepping away from what looked like… A tear or rip, opening wide until it expanded, reaching the ground and spreading out wide until it reached either side of the street. No one knew what to say or do, keeping their distance. That is until something came out of the portal with the marching of boots and with spear and shield in hand.
