Chapter 33 by Legionaire9
Where can he be most helpful?
The armorys
Raquel was capable on her own. The majority of the defenders would not be on the wall thanks to his actions so Malena and Dana should have no problem getting to the gatehouse. Thanks to his rather public killing of the mages and the chaos of the tower, most of the troops were probably trying to beat the armory doors down or scrambling for leadership. Descending and exiting the tower, Midnight paused at the base and wondered if he should grab Nagi but decided against it. He had turned her loose. Let her have her fun. Jetting across the mix of courtyards and buildings, he was quickly attracted to a large crowd of soldiers nearly 400 strong gathered outside a warehouse. The armory doors could take a lot of punishment but they wouldnt last under that onslaught. Moving to a spot under the crowd he prepared 6 tentacles and shot them up to impale the 6 closest soldiers. As their friends cried in alarm, he moved several feet over and repeated his performance. It took 12 attacks for the rest of the soldiers to scatter and as they did he slipped under the door. Inside was a mess. Three soldiers lay dead on the floor while the woman he claimed stood with drawn sword and faced the door. Tears streaked down her face, perhaps she had known these people? As he rose through the floor, she turned to him, only stopping her blade when she recognized the shape.
"You bastard!"
"Well thats not very nice. And here I came all this way just to save you."
She laughs drily. "You came here to kill soldiers and steal weapons. You dont care about me or Dhaelia."
"Thats where you are wrong." As he spoke, Midnight began pulling weapons and armor and putting them in his inventory. "I didnt originally intend to subjugate you two. But I did. And since I did, I am responsible for you. It is my job and my privilege to protect what is mine and your job to thank me for doing it. Now... whats say you and I go get Dhaelia?"
She matched his gaze. He had specifically avoided phrasing what he said as an order to see what she would do. After another minute she nods and sheathes her sword. "Agreed. Right now, her safety is my highest priority. But know this. I will protect her, even from you fiend.
"Good enough. What is your name?"
"Marshon."
"Well Marshon, lets go get your friend. And then I'll show you both why I am your perfect master." As they both exited the barracks, a cluster of a dozen soldiers were formed up.
"Marshon, what the HELL are you doing? Did you forget every goddam thing you were told? Idiot girl, get the fuck over here before i...." with a soft thunk, the lead soldier's words died off as he processed the tendril punched through his platemail.
"Oh? Or youll what? Bully the weak? Teach her her place?" His voice was soft but laced with malice. "Marshon is mine. Mine to use, Mine to command, and Mine to protect. Marshon? I hope you dont mind me killing these people?"
She shrugged. "Dhaelia and I joined to avoid starving. She's the only one that matters."
With a grim smile, Midnight sent seven more tendrils. Two or three batted away the attacks, but he just redirected his tendrils until he had impaled 8 more guards. Throwing down their weapons, the other three tried to run only to be cut down. "Lead the way to the nearest armory." With a nod, Mashon took off zig zagging through buildings. 2 minutes later they rounded the corner and found a large crowd waiting for them. In a central pavilion. With dismay, Midnight had to admit he was outmatched here. There had to be close to 2k troops here and there was no way he could make it across the plaza, with Mashon to the armory. Their arrival had not gone unnoticed either as several people began calling attention to them. With seconds to make a decision, there was only one thing to do.
"Mashon, stay behind me and watch my back." Stepping back into the alley, he prepared 8 tentacles. As the first wave approached, he crafted 4 blades and 4 spears. Time to go ham. He spun the blades and as the first wave advanced, he started laying the foundation of a wall of dead bodies. For all of ten minutes, he felt immortal, dropping soldiers like no ones business, but it was not to last. As he stabbed a soldier, he felt a searing pain and drew back a stub. It was the beginning of his misfortunes. As he reeled from the pain, two soldiers took the opportunity to hack into two more of his tentacles.
"Hell!" Swinging an overarching strike, he cleaved two soldiers and **** the rest back. As he staggered back, a particularly large soldier moved in with an axe to finish him off. Well shit. As the axe descended, it was as if time slowed down. Fuck shit goddamhell! Midnight cursed himself. He knew better. He could have been stealthier, could have waited, could have retreated. Why the HELL had he fought a straight up battle against a horde of two thousand? Now he had wasted his second life. He was thinking quickly but he couldnt move any quicker and was going to get hit. And the worst of all was his new slaves would probably follow him and he couldnt raise his remaining tentacles to stop it. He couldnt phase as the pain was too intense for him to relax his body.
So this was how it felt to be dying
Can he be saved?
