“I think I’m gonna wait on it actually” Emma answered, seeing your quizzical look and continuing before you could ask why.

“I love the idea, don't get me wrong, but… I’m worried I’ll be glued to my phone 24/7 if I can see the numbers tick up or I’ll be texting you and asking to check the KDK so I can get an update. I want the upgrade but is it something I need?” Emma replied, questioning herself with a far off look as she returned to her thoughts.

You couldn’t help but smile when Emma was taking this seriously. You had both been changed by this app and while you assumed it was for the better, taking the time to actually consider the bigger decisions like this would always be a good idea.

“That’s fine. Take as much time as you want but I will say this. I didn’t get this option but the wording was ‘her own chosen personal device’ so I don’t think that means you have to choose your phone. I might be wrong but it might mean you can have it on your PC. Then you can’t exactly carry it around at school or on the weekend trip. An option to think about at least” you said shrugging your shoulders.

You could tell Emma hadn’t thought of that option when her eyes lit up with recognition before she returned to pondering the decision, giving you time to look at the KDK profiles that had now loaded.

Your earlier guess about being close to a level up was closer than you thought but after scanning the other profiles, you were pretty sure you could cross the threshold if Emma wanted to.

“Sorry to distract you but…” you said, alerting Emma, bringing her attention back to your phone.

Emma stared at the number of seconds for a moment before turning her eyes back to you.

“I think we should wait personally” you said before Emma could respond, deciding to explain yourself first.

“Tonight has been amazing but I don’t think either of us expected things to go this far and throwing you level 4 and then my own level up into the mix… I know it won’t ruin what just happened, again amazing, but I just want tonight to be remembered for us and not the KDK” you admitted.

You could see Emma look relieved and the first genuine smile appeared on your face since your phone had come out of your pocket.

“I agree. I would kiss you right now but I don’t think I can limit myself to 100 seconds” she joked, the conversation flowing normally between you once again.

It was a bit awkward that you couldn’t sit side by side without increasing her counter but you managed to make it work. Without involving any of the explicit parts of your day, you managed to catch Emma up with what she had missed and what she could vaguely expect in her dreams tonight.

The topic that got you rattled the most was how the principal had treated Rebecca, letting Emma know about the deal you had struck and how that might slightly affect your plans for prom. She seemed just as annoyed as you but instead of dwelling on it and ruining the end of your night you just asked her to think it over tomorrow and if she had any ideas for some **** then she should let you know.

You had planned on bringing up Sarah getting close to level 4 but that problem had half worked itself out, no longer needing to worry about your virginity problem. You figured it could wait until tomorrow and while you might be walking to school with Sarah again tomorrow, you would make time for you and Emma to talk.

Both of you bounced from topic to topic after that, talking about anything you could think of, knowing that you would eventually have to leave and the night would have to end. Neither of you wanted to part but eventually, you knew that either Sarah or Lucy were going to get suspicious of where you were if they hadn’t already noticed and staying even longer was bound to get you in trouble.

The conversation had ended and it felt like you both knew that now was the time for you to go even if you had enough topics to last you hours if not days. With a sigh, you got up and Emma lead you to the backyard so you could leave the same way you came in.

“Just one quick kiss before I go. Pretty please?” you asked, knowing Emma was still cautious of the time.

She walked up to you and let her hands fall on your covered shoulders, moving her lips ever closer to you before quickly getting on her tiptoes to kiss your forehead, backing away and out of your range with a smirk.

“You got your kiss. Now, if you don’t want me cranky tomorrow morning then you need to let me go to bed before it gets too late” Emma said with a smile, and knowing her, she would actually be in a bad mood tomorrow even if she thought it was a joke.

That became your cue to leave and after a few more ‘I love you’s’ back and forth, you made your way outside and back home to your own back door.

You had planned on going straight inside but you took the chance to sit in one of the chairs on the patio outside where nobody knew where you were, taking in everything that had happened and giving yourself a moment to reflect.

The world fell silent around you and while the air was cool at this time of night, the temperature wasn’t something that bothered you. Your thoughts turned towards everything that had happened so far and how it felt like everything had led up to tonight, the night you shared with Emma. You were honest with her and it felt like a shame to part but there were still some things you wanted to think about alone.

The KDK itself had changed the direction of your life and while you weren’t about to start investigating its origin any deeper than you already had, you were noticing a trend that at least caught your attention. Its descriptions were becoming casual compared to the ones you got when it first activated and yes, the initial notes and descriptions for the app’s features had some information language, that felt preprogrammed.

The ones you got recently however seemed to be reacting to the events that felt less defined. It could have been your imagination or just a plain old coincidence but the fact that it had mentioned ’young love’ in an achievement description when they were supposed to be set in stone was what bothered you more than it probably should.
