Easier done than said

For all the drama and buildup, what happens next is actually rather anticlimactic. In the quiet of the evening forest, there’s little to indicate that powerful magic is being used. Some of that is due to Samus, who is absorbing the expended power to avoid detection. You can hear him murmur instructions to Nadia, who kneels in front of the seated demigod with a hand on his forehead.

Gradually, you feel an almost physical pull, as the faerie draws upon your powers through the bond. From the way the others shift uncomfortably, you assume they feel it as well. Looking at Nadia, you see that she shimmers with the accumulated magic, making her colorful wings sparkle in the fading light. The effect is beautiful, but a glance from Samus reminds you to clear your mind.

As you watch, the shimmering gathers at the palm of Nadia’s hand, glowing far more brightly. A few more quiet instructions, and you see the light pass into Samus, who shivers as it does so. At the same time, the pull in your mind stops. Nadia lowers her hand, and takes a deep breath. You can see she’s sweating from her efforts, but she turns and smiles at you.

Samus takes a breath as well, and nods. “Very good. Better than expected, actually. Your bonds are strong, Nicholas. The transfer of power was incredible. I don’t think you need any more practice.”

You look at him in surprise. “Just like that?”

Samus looks at you. “Just like that. I will be here to assist, regardless. And the power you all just expended will give me the strength to transport you into the capital. You will be a bit weak, magically, for a day or two, however.”

You nod. “Just as well. I can’t leave yet anyway, I need to pester a certain noble tomorrow.”

Alex bounces to her feet. “So that’s it? We’re done?”

Nadia laughs. “I think so. That was tiring, I couldn’t do it again just yet anyway.”

Samus stands. “Yes, we are finished. Come see me again in three days, and we can attempt your rescue. If you’re prepared, that is.”

You nod again. “I will be. Thank you, Samus.”

The demigod nods, and without another word, walks into the forest and disappears. You look around at the girls, and see they’re all looking back at you. You chuckle and shake your head.

“I take it that we’re not going back to the city tonight, are we?”

Beside you as always, Ferra takes your hand. Slowly, she leads you to the center of the clearing where Nadia is standing. The two redheads look at you, and smile. Nadia speaks first.

“I told you we have plans, master…”

You look around, and the other girls are approaching as well. “So you did. At least we have the privacy of wide open spaces.”

Ferra nods, looking up at you as her clothes vanish. Gently, she places a hand on your chest, and bites her lip before speaking.
