Where's the Book?

Scooby Doo

Tome Level: Emergency. Housed Imps: 0

"And this is how he flew about, see high strength circus wires. Combined with the fog and darkness, it made him seem like he was floating.” a heavy even voice pointed out.

"With a mechanical wrench hidden in the costume and controls in his gloves, he was able to rise and lower himself as need be along with moving himself around. And he easily installed all the equipment when he was doing maintenance on the rafters.” a well practiced female voice continued.

“And would have gotten away with it if it weren’t for you meddling kids! And your stupid dog” a stern voice grumbled.

"Reeehehehehe" came the expected strange high pitched laugh.

The Scooby gang had just foiled another plot to scare people off. A local library was going to close down due to anyone trying to do repairs on it was scared away by the “Shuusher” the ghost of a long dead librarian. In reality it was just another plan to get land cheap after the owners moved or sold. A construction worker had been behind it, hired and supplied by land developers. He stupidly kept paperwork proving it all so his bosses would probably be getting some unwanted visitors or at least bad press. All and all it was a simple by the books mystery, nothing really of note save for one thing left unsolved...,

“That’s also how he made that one book chase Scaggy and Scooby around while we were with him and Misses Emilia, to better throw us off his tracks.” Dahene pointed out as she nodded to herself, proud of her observation.

“Wait...,” the Criminal said as he moved around in the net, one of those big balled up ones Fred liked to use, “I didn’t do that. Yeah the wires were me but I was to use them for myself. I didn’t use a book.” The group looked at each other as they quickly processed this. The Lankest of the group reached the answer first.

“Thenthenthen.... that really was a g-g-g-ghost book!?!?!?” Shaggy muttered as his dog kept back into his arms in fear, their teeth chattering together forming a weird chilling rhythm

“Knock it off you two there’s no such thing as a ghost.” Velma replied, her eyes rolling again. There had to be an actual explanation, there always was.

“But you’re the only one that had access to the wires. How do you explain that flying ghost book that chased the guys?” Daphne asked, turning face the crook. The he just shrugged at the question.

“You're the ones found my set up." He pointed out, "All the wires were connected to something. If you think I did it, check the wires. Give 'em a pull and see what comes up. Besides, I don't have a reason to try lying about this, what do I get outta it?” A heavy hand started to roll the balled up crook.

“That’s enough outta you, off to the station with yah.” The cop snapped as he rolled the crimson off to the awaiting van. That was one problem with most their cases, they had to get the crook out in equality odd ways. Or at the very least, the biggest car the police had.

An elderly woman in an old fashioned librarian outfit waved the car off as it left, before turning back to the gang. “Oh I’d like to thank you all for this. And finding the land grant that was in my family. My daughter is coming in tomorrow to take over and I’ll surprise her with the paperwork. The Pensbrook library will be around for a long time.”

“No problem Misses Beaksly. It’s the least we could do while your friends in town fixed the van.” Fred said, sheepishly scratching the back of his head with a grin on his face, “Too bad about that weird book though, would have thought he’d done it. Everything seemed to fit together."

“Who’s to say he’s not lying?” Velma said with a cross of her arms and tap of her foot, "There's no such things as ghosts." to which her red-haired companion raised her voice.

“But we've seen a few..., weird things haven't we Velma. You can't deny some of them like that Witch or the weird Island... right?” Daphne asked as she thought on it before speaking up again, "I don't see a reason for him to lie either. Not unless someone wants to keep scaring poor Miss Beaksly." Her glasses wearing companion rolled her eyes again with a slight sigh. Fred thought it best to step in before it got worse.

“Well we have a few hours before the van is ready, we can go take another look.” Fred said as he thumbed back at the old semi crumbling library next to the woods that they had just spent the last few hours in. The flash of lightning off to the side was... oddly timed. Fred always had a habit of doing that which was never good for Shaggy's heart or Scooby's mind. The two kept shivering as Shaggy's feet seemed to vibrate into the ground, digging out holes to hold him in place.

“Oh no. No no non, nono. Just got done and now you want us to head back inside that creepy place and..... you’re playing us like a fiddle ain’t ya.” Shaggy started and quickly gave up an argument. Seeing as Velma and Daphne both lead up Scooby Snack boxes. The girls were always good about having those on hand to the point Shaggy was sure they had magic bags or something with an unlimited supply. He sighed as he started to climb out of the holes.

“Well I’ll be in the main office if you need me dears. But don’t **** yourself to look into it if you don’t want to.” Ms Beakly said as she started to shuffle off into the building.

“Ah well you heard her gang, let’s vamoose.” Shaggy said as he started to walk away. Only to be dragged back by the ear by Daphne.

"Shaggy, come on. Miss Beakly can stand the ghosts and fears, why can't you?" the red hair woman stated as she pulled him along.

Shaggy was muttering something about how the old lady didn't have much left to be scared off, while Fred and Velma laughed and moved to catch up. Scooby, having been dropped when Shaggy was getting dragged gave a little whine. Something felt wrong about this. That ghost book looked... really vicious. Like the big dane himself when really famished.

"Rere ree go agrein..." the dog muttered as it moved to catch up with his friends.

....

Inside the building, something was moving. In brief flashes of light portals opened, and a book flew through them. It was a brown bound book with old parchment like paper. The cover showed a sketch of a woman with a tail and horns but the weird fact was the book seemed to have 'teeth'. Two large fangs made out of wrapped up sheets from inside itself. It was floating around, gashing at any movement, searching for something. A new Imp, a new Mistress. It had to find one.... somewhere.

Thus far it had only found 2 beings and when it went to convert... the sound the two things made hurt. How does a mortal scream that loud and move that fast?

It wouldn't last much longer but then..., it sensed a number of mortals entering the building. It had to make a move to to claim one. Three women... two men and.... that dog. Weird but... it seemed smart enough to be a candidate.

Who does the Tome go after?
