Chapter 2

What's next?
Inquisitorius
Ahsoka sat in the soft red light of her cell, casting a malevolent hue to her orange skin. The meditative state she remained in did well at calming her nerves but also skewed her perception of time. To her mind it could have been hours or days since she had relinquished herself to Imperial captivity. She searched in the **** for guidance, for a sign of Anakin. Anything to help her understand how to carry on in this insane gambit. The Dark Side obscured her connection, muddying the waters making it impossible to see, no matter how much she concentrated. She was consciously aware enough to register the opening of her cell door and sensed the presence of an unremarkable entity in the ****. ‘Only a stormtrooper. Probably food,’ she thought absentmindedly. Sure enough, moments later the door closed, and the presence faded. Time may have had no effect on her mind, but her stomach was still **** to time’s steady crawl.
Ahsoka began to turn, ready to inspect the slop they called food, when her eyes registered the legs at eye level still standing by the door. By instinct, she jumped back to the wall falling into a combat stance, prepared for an attack – one that wouldn’t come. The figure stood there, arms folded contemplating the Jedi before him. Ahsoka was quick to note the Inquisitor’s uniform and typical circular lightsaber. Despite the former Jedi’s movements, the man seemed unfazed and even bore an expression of slight amusement, the hint of a smile playing on his lips.
The white skin with distinct markings of red around the eyes and forehead denoted him clearly as a Pau’an, one of very few Ahsoka had seen in her life. “Who are you?” she demanded, posture still aggressive and ready.
“Now, now,” he said coolly. “I hardly think you’re in a position to be asking the questions here, miss Tano.” There was an understated authority in his tone, little outright menace but a gravity in conviction. “Nevertheless, I will answer your question, seeing as it coincides with my purpose here. I am known as the Grand Inquisitor; I understand you’ve had some experience with my… siblings.”
The Inquisitor began pacing back and forth in front of her, eyes never looking away but always searching her. ‘No,’ she thought, ‘evaluating.’ He studied her, occasionally pausing, or changing his movements, judging her reactions. His face gave no hints to his thoughts. Ahsoka wondered if he had only come here to inspect his new acquisition. ‘Two can play at this.’
Ahsoka took a jolting pace forward, stopping as abruptly as she began a fraction of a second earlier. In that time the inquisitor had summoned his blade to his hand and had his thumb hovering over the activation button, two hands firmly gripping the handle angled before him, forward emitter diagonally between them. She took a relaxed pace back, impressed by his reactions and technique but also smug at her obvious reputation. With that, the man reclipped his lightsaber and calmly strode out of the cell, ray shield and door closing behind him, leaving Ahsoka to her cold mush.
A sudden lurch in Ahsoka’s stomach some time later tipped her off to their exit from hyperspace. These star destroyers were very similar to the Venerator class cruisers she had spent so much time aboard in her younger years, meaning a few of her old tricks were still useful. Nobody had disturbed her since her visit from the Grand Inquisitor, though she could say that with only so much confidence. He had been able to mask his presence in the ****. She had only known one other capable of that ability, the emperor himself. ‘Another tool of the Dark Side the Jedi feared to use,’ she thought, surprising herself with the bitterness of the thought. Wherever they were was heavy with the Dark Side. She would have to be on guard and keep her mind clear. ‘Easier said than done,’ she supposed.
A squad of stormtroopers came minutes later to fetch her from her cell. Despite her compliance so far, they seemed to place little trust in that. Daring a glance behind during their long march through the corridors, Ahsoka noticed one of the Inquisitors trailing behind her escort, one that she didn’t know. She supposed she should have felt honoured, 4 Inquisitors on one ship alone, but the worry overwhelmed any smugness she felt.
Eventually they arrived in the hanger, a shuttle prepared and ready sitting idle in the centre of the cavernous room. The open ray shielded wall showed the vacuum of space beyond. Out floating in the void stood a blue marble, gently turning in place as the cruiser orbited high over. Juxtaposed was the churning red sphere that lay behind, the planet to this azure satellite. Ahsoka remembered her last visit to this system well. She and Anakin had rescued captured younglings from the clutches of the Sith. A glance to the ominous figure in black now left no doubt in her mind what would have become of the children had they failed. Perhaps that had been there fate anyway. It was only fitting. If you want to corrupt Jedi into walking weapons, bring them to Mustafar…
