Chapter 23
by Leviathan
What's next?
Breakfast with Jiro
Unknown to Ochako, Izuku had been awake while she tried to figure out how to leave through the window, and had taken that chance to speed towards the laundry room and drop their covers there, eliminating the need for robots to pick them up and notice the strange stains in them. With how worried she was about that, he was glad he could be of any help, even if he couldn't reveal his involvement.
A few days passed. His time in Sakuya's room was uneventful, and he took care to not touch any of the other girls until Saturday arrived, though it also meant he started growing more and more pent up with each day once more.
He woke up in his actual bed on the room he shared with Kodama, glad that this time she had stayed on her own bed. His first weekend at school, huh? It kinda sounded exciting, to have no responsibilities and lots of things he could do and places he could explore. So, he threw on a baggy T-shirt and shorts, heading downstairs for breakfast with the others.
"A-Ah... Midoriya." The lovely sight of a braless Jiro in a baggy white T-shirt and panties greeted him right as he was turning around to head to the kitchen. "I was, erm, looking for you. Everyone left early to train or explore, but I didn't find you anywhere, so I figured you were still asleep and you'd wanna eat something before leaving... want some coffee?"
The two sat down together, though not before Jiro went to the kitchen and brought back a nice breakfast platter for two - eggs, bacon, pancake and other American classics. "Was feeling a little exotic. Don't give me that look, it's hella tasty!" Izuku had to agree there - they were delicious, especially when paired together.
"Y-Yeah, I love the flavor... thank you, Jiro-san."
"...Kyouka."
"Hm?" He turned to face her with a puzzled expression while eating a spoonful of breakfast.
"...call me Kyouka. Please. L-Let me be a little selfish here, like Tsu can be sometimes, okay?" Her eyes met his, though her face was turned ahead, her hands playing with her earlobe-cables timidly. "We've... seen each other naked, and laid next to each other like that... I don't think we can really claim we're just acquaintances or normal classmates after that."
The poor boy almost spits half his spoonful out at the memory of that day. Still, he regained his composure when he noticed how embarrassed Jiro seemed to even bring up the topic.
"Y-You're right, Kyouka-san. So... I guess you'll have to call me Izuku, then?"
She blushed a little harder. "Dude, you wish."
"H-Hey!"
"I am not calling you by your first name in public. I would die. Then revive myself only to dig my grave and die in it again. Not happening. Actually let's just forget I said anything, okay? Call me Jiro if you feel like it."
Izuku pouted a little while having another spoonful. "T-Then, I'll only call you by your first name in private."
While he couldn't see her while turning his head aside to pout, he sure could hear her thoughts.
Oh. That's even WORSE. We'll look like some secret couple! No fucking way!
I-I mean, I don't really object to the couple part...
No, what the hell, I DO object! And the secrecy only makes it more embarrassing!
You know, screw it, topic change time.
She coughed into her fist, her earlobes still twiddling around each other. "Y-You know... I just realized I don't know that much about ya. Why are you here, anyway?" She immediately course-corrected, noticing how harsh she made that sound. "Like, your Quirk is stupid strong, though it takes a toll on you, sure, I'll give you that. I more mean your, uh, motivation?"
It didn't take too long to explain his All Might fanboying and subsequent goal to be like him. "Damn, you're a Hero Otaku through and through, aren't you?" He embarrasedly ruffled the back of his hair, as the comment brought back some memories of the years of bullying his passions got him. "I'm no one to talk, I guess. Sorry, that was kinda rude. I have a bad time expressing myself sometimes..."
No one to talk? What was Jiro a nerd about? "And... what about you, K-Kyouka-san? Why did you become a hero?"
Damn it, he did say it in the end. Why does my name sound so cute coming out of his mouth? I want him to say it more... No, the hell, I don't! What's gotten into me, anyway?!
"I dunno. I think... I've always wanted to save people, you know? It's totally metal." Metal? "Beating villains isn't really something I'm built to do, but it's also a part of the job so I guess I gotta make myself stronger and learn the ropes. But if I can help people caught up in the attacks, detect survivors, scout for villains... if I can help people live a little longer, it's all worth it, isn't it?"
"Y-Yeah! You have the spirit of a true hero, Kyouka-san! A-At least, going by what All Might's told me."
She blushed deeply, but her face had a look of frustration to it.
None of what my folks taught me is ever going to help me be a better hero, though.
Mina's a great dancer, and that translates well into her bodily control.
Sayuka's obsession with fashion and looking pretty? It maximizes the potential of her Quirk on her fingernails.
Even Izuku's nerdy hobby lets him evaluate Quirks and moves at a glance and develop countermeasures on the fly. He fought goddamn Mirko and started dodging after a couple kicks, when I couldn't even see her at all.
But music? What the hell is music good for, in the hero world? I don't want to waste all the work my peeps put into raising me... yet here I am, wasting it on heroism. Way to go, Kyouka.
Izuku gulped, listening to her thoughts as he finished up his breakfast. He was unsure of how to approach the topic, if at all, and eventually decided he should address it later on, when it came more naturally to the topic rather than making it look like he can read minds.
"Gather up, class." Aizawa's voice greeted them on Monday, as it did last Friday. "As you all should know by now, the Sports Festival is right around the corner. You'll have a chance to show the world, especially our country's pros out there, what you're made of. Make sure you don't waste this chance. Train, eat and sleep well, prepare any equipment you require beforehand, and overall? Keep that Plus Ultra spirit within you."
Class was somewhat noisy once he left. Uraraka herself was seemingly in a strange mood, making a really scary face while getting pumped up about the festival. "Everyone...! Let's do our best...!!! I'll do my best...!!!!!"
He almost asked her what was wrong, but then remembered why she was working towards becoming a hero to begin with. She needed the money. If a lot of pros noticed her, that would mean she would have a headstart as a hero once she graduated, and would be better placed for a solid salary. So, rather than wonder about it, he joined her.
"Y-Yeah!! Let's do our best, guys!!"
Unsurprisingly, most of the class just stared at them and reluctantly agreed, usually while wondering what had gotten into them. But one person in particular was staring daggers into him... Todoroki Shojo, number 2 pro hero Endeavor's daughter. She approached him after a while of this strange behavior, making Uraraka and the others fall into silence as they waited for Todoroki to say anything.
"Midoriya. Let me make this clear. Looking at it objectively speaking, I'm stronger than you are." Her stare was cold and yet, somehow murderously intense. Fitting of her Quirk, he couldn't help but note.
"Y-Yeah." He also couldn't help but agree with her. He saw her at the Battle Trial. She defeated her opponents in one move, effortlessly, through sheer mastery over her Quirk. Her partner didn't even get to do a thing, neither did his opponents. She was insanely strong.
"Yet somehow, All Might has his eye on you." Izuku gulped. He tried to spend as little time as possible with All Might to avoid it being seen as favoritism, and yet she noticed? "I'll take your silence as an affirmation. I'm going to beat you at the Sports Festival. Better get ready."
As much as he agreed this would be what eventually would happen in the Festival... he closed his hand into a fist. He still wanted to win, and show the world the future Symbol of Peace's strength.
"Todoroki-kun... I don't know what's on your mind right now, but of course you're better than me. I think you're more capable than most people in this room..." Another gulp. Even as his legs shook in nervousness, he kept pushing the words out. "That's why I can't afford to stay behind."
"That's why I'll give it my all too." He stared her down with his full resolve on his face.
"...yeah."
Class was awfully silent after that.
