Chapter 20

What's next?
Preparing for war
The ride back to Joey’s apartment was quieter than before.
Not uncomfortable.
Heavy.
Greta’s warning lingered in the car like smoke.
They’ll come after the people around you first.
Joey could feel Cassandra thinking through possibilities beside him through their emotional bond. Strategy. Concern. ****. The strange calm focus of a predator preparing for another attack.
And underneath all of that—
fear.
Not for herself.
For him.
For Crystal.
That realization hit Joey harder than he expected.
Crystal must have sensed the tension too because by the time they parked outside Joey’s apartment, her earlier teasing had faded.
“So…” she said quietly while climbing out of the car, “what exactly does ‘securing the house’ mean in vampire world?”
Cassandra grabbed the duffel bag from the trunk.
“It means,” she replied calmly, “that if someone unwanted enters the apartment tonight, they’ll deeply regret it.”
Crystal blinked.
“…That somehow made me feel safer and worse at the same time.”
“Correct reaction,” Cassandra said.
Inside, the apartment suddenly felt much smaller with the weight of everything following them in.
Cassandra immediately got to work.
Silver powder was sprinkled carefully along windowsills.
Strange symbols were drawn in chalk near the doors.
Tiny black candles appeared from seemingly nowhere.
Joey watched her move around the apartment with focused precision.
She looked less like a vampire now and more like a general preparing a battlefield.
Crystal sat cross-legged on the couch watching too.
“…You know,” she muttered, “if somebody walked in right now, this would look like the weirdest occult sleepover ever.”
Joey snorted softly.
“That stopped being inaccurate hours ago.”
Cassandra glanced toward them without looking up from the symbol she was carving into the wall beside the window.
“The protections will alert me if anyone approaches.”
“You keep saying things that sound cool until I remember vampire assassins are real,” Joey muttered.
Cassandra’s eyes flicked toward him briefly.
And immediately softened
It was subtle.
Tiny.
But Joey felt it fully through the bond.
Affection.
Trust.
The realization still made his chest tighten every time.
Crystal noticed the look too.
Her expression shifted slightly.
Curious.
A little ****.
“You really care about him,” she said quietly.
The room went still.
Cassandra paused mid-motion.
Joey looked instantly uncomfortable.
Crystal immediately pointed at him.
“And don’t do the weird self-esteem thing where you act surprised by that.”
“I was not—”
“You absolutely were.”
Cassandra actually smirked faintly at that.
Joey threw his hands up dramatically.
“I’m being psychologically bullied in my own home.”
“You’ll survive,” both women answered simultaneously.
Joey groaned loudly.
Crystal laughed.
And just like that—
some of the fear broke.
Not gone.
But Lighter
Buy the time Cassandra finished setting protections around the apartment, the atmosphere had shifted completely from panic into something stranger.
Safer.
Warmer.
Too intimate.
Joey noticed it first when Crystal sat down beside him on the couch instead of across from him.
Then Cassandra sat on his other side.
Then suddenly he became extremely aware of both women at once.
Crystal leaned against his shoulder casually while scrolling through her phone.
Cassandra lounged beside him with one leg draped over his thigh possessively.
Joey’s brain immediately started overheating.
Through the bond he felt Cassandra’s amusement spike.
“You’re doing it again,” she murmured.
“Doing what?”
“Panicking internally.”
“I am in between two insanely attractive women while supernatural killers may be hunting us. My emotional options are limited.”
Crystal laughed softly against his shoulder.
“You know,” she said, looking up at him now, “you keep talking like you’re some average guy.”
Joey blinked.
“…I mean…”
Crystal rolled her eyes.
“You carried me out of a collapsing restaurant after getting stabbed.”
“He distracted a professional hunter with a steering wheel lock,” Cassandra added.
“That was admittedly very funny,” Crystal agreed.
“And deeply stupid,” Cassandra finished.
Joey looked offended.
“It worked!”
“It worked because you are unpredictably reckless when protecting people.”
Joey opened his mouth—
then stopped.
Because neither of them sounded annoyed.
They sounded…
fond.
That realization hit him hard enough to make him quiet.
Crystal noticed immediately.
“So there’s that look again,” she said softly.
“What look?”
“The one where you don’t understand why someone would care about you.”
Joey looked away automatically.
Which only made both women move closer.
Great.
Fantastic.
No escape.
Cassandra’s fingers brushed lightly against his jaw, guiding his attention back toward them.
“You almost died for us,” she said quietly.
Crystal nodded.
“And you didn’t even hesitate.”
Joey swallowed hard.
“I just… didn’t want either of you hurt.”
The sincerity in his voice made the room fall quiet again.
Through the bond Joey felt Cassandra’s emotions surge sharply this time.
Desire.
Protectiveness.
Something dangerously close to love.
And judging by the way Crystal was looking at him now—
she felt something too.
Cassandra and Crystal looked at each other briefly with a nod.
"Let's move this to the bedroom," Cassandra suggested
“Oh,” Joey said, moving with the others no resistance given.
