Chapter 6
by Bungun
What do you want?
Play with your catch
The attention doesn't cause you to shrink back. What it does instead is **** you to be a little more appreciative of her.
Her previous stare insists while you return an inquisitive one. Then she blinks to moisten her eyes, only to stare again.
She is just that captivating. Do hares have eyelashes? You never noticed. This one does; long, curved ones that like to beg and quiver.
Of course, that's hardly enough to quench your newfound thirst of knowledge for this specimen.
The inspection continues when you lean closer to her, first perceiving a faint scent of grass that sticks to her fur like a perfume. It is refreshing and inviting, so much so that you want to bury your nose into her snowy coat.
'Fair enough...' you think to yourself. 'But is it worth a bite?'
Worth it or not, the doubt shortly blooms into a certainty that haunts the back of your mind. Missing this chance would turn into a longing you would regret for the rest of your life. Not only that. The heat emanating from the trembling cotton ball in your embrace is reminiscent of a fireplace in the dead of winter. The calming rustle of her dress is unable to muffle her racing heart no matter how much the breeze pulls at its hems.
Every small detail about her becomes a comfort you crave to obtain. Parting with the bunny has just become much harder...
While she stands perplexed at your scrutiny, muscles tensing and guard raising up, your arms tighten around her fragile frame. She must believe that not even her pitiful looks could affect you in the end, as she finds the courage to interrogate you with some brief vocalizations.
She talks, and you nod, but little gets across. Despite knowing her worries, it seems like the only way you could assure her is risking a bite. It's inevitable. While you brood over this inevitable, she pouts while fretting over a much simpler worry. "Friend?! Not friend?!"
"..."
Having decided that a good bunny deserves a friend, you slowly inch closer until your nose settles upon her neck, ignoring the threatening growl from her throat. A deep breath fills your lungs with her scent as your eyes come to a close, the peaceful moment robbing you of your sense of direction.
Seeing that was all you wanted to do, she finally appears to realise something, and luckily, she doesn't reject your gesture. Although she is dissatisfied at the ride of emotions you put her through, she reciprocates your attempt at bonding with a small grunt. Her snout probes through your short hair and over your cheek for any smell she wouldn't agree with, then signals with another grunt that everything seems to be in order.
Now that she has determined you're just being playful, fearing for her life is no longer a priority. Her drooping ears regain their liveliness, as much fascination now as there was fright. Her hands gently pinch and feel the smoothness of your skin while she becomes more talkative with noises of wonder. Compared to her fur, your hair is rough and a little messy, but this doesn't discourage her from trying to style it with a frisky ruffle.
In turn, you grasp the base of her ear and glide along its length, repeating the motion once it slides out of your hand. This simple motion seems to meet her high grooming standards, as her breathing now hums along in satisfaction.
The bunny is also generous enough to let you know how meticulous she is about oral hygiene. Although her voice stills holds a scolding tone, it delivers sweet breaths with hints of fruit and mint to your face.
The rest of her 'words' fall on deaf ears. In your drowsy state, all your mind can picture is cake and sugar; her lips that stick to each other and gloss like melted caramel.
You no longer view her as just a hare that you could tease, have a laugh at, and let go. It might be too late for that, but this is not all that bad either.
This might be your first taste of sweet rabbit, and by all means, you hope she doesn't bite...

A Hunter's Monster Tales
From your cabin
The world is changing. You can't remember the last time you've heard a wolf; the last time you've seen a fox or a rabbit. It feels as if the animals are going extinct. While your food reserves may keep in you good strength for months, and there is no lack of fruit and wild vegetables to forage, it's just... not the same. The mountainous terrain feels more foreign with each passing day. You've been a hunter your entire life, yet all of it feels useless now. Since the change has started taking place, your traps have remained untouched. Animal tracks no longer look like an animal's. Their paths seem to have purpose. They reason their decisions. And they're closing in on you.
