Chapter 12

What comes next?
Phase 1: Who do you think is the sleeper agent?
Goodbye Girls adjusted her glasses upon her face, then swiveled her seat sideways to face you directly. "Well, you've been on some missions by now. You've learned something about the girls and I happen to know you've been doing some spying on them in your own time. I'm not judging you for that... rather, you've been doing exactly what I asked you to do. I'd imagine you know more about the Goodbye Girls than any handler in their history... You know more even than I do, and I'm their boss!"
You again held your tongue, avoiding mentioning that Goodbye didn't seem to be making much of an effort to get to know them. Instead, you nodded, but you couldn't help but voice reservations... you had to let her know that this was still an incomplete investigation. Indeed, a lot of intel had come to light, but there was nothing conclusive to hold over any of the girls. A lot of it was either conjecture, hearsay, or even things that sounded like tall tales... In other words, you hadn't witnessed any of them committing any acts against CEDIT with your own eyes. If anything, you'd done more damage to them during your missions than they had you...
"Dammit, Ciao!" Goodbye clapped her mug down onto the console and pressed one finger into your chest, suddenly seeming surprisingly authoritative. "Here's how it is: we have resources we can devote to investigating one of the girls, but we can't assign those resources to every one of them; if we did, we'd spread our elite operatives too thin and waste untold dollars. That's the harsh reality of administration. Use that gut feel you field agents are always so proud of! There's gotta be something that makes one of them seem more suspicious than the others, right? You've been on two life-threatening missions; you must have felt something!"
For a moment, you entertained the thought that she might be worried because someone over her had her ass on the line, waiting to cast her out of her position if she didn't produce results on this... but you could tell from her sense of desperation that in reality, she was just fearing for her own life. Maybe part of it was worry for yours too? Whatever the case, it was hard not to pity her.
But were you ready to make any kind of judgment? You thought hard about the facts that you'd collected so far... You remembered the dossiers that you'd been filling out and the information you'd put into each. Was any of that damning enough that the girls needed to be assigned tails and other invasions of privacy?
Or... would the dangerous answer be to pick none of them? After all, if there was a mole and you failed to act on your instincts, you could be putting the whole agency at risk.
((This choice will affect a branch you can take later, but will not be your final choice in this game as far as picking the sleeper agent. Will you pick someone you don't trust... or someone you want to learn more about? The choice is yours!))
Who do you think is the sleeper agent?
