Overcoming Stigma

A week later, Charlie and Abby arrived at Jerome's house, with Carrie's younger sister, Cassie, in tow. Charlie looked around the well-appointed manse.

"Nice to meet you ... Jerome. I didn't expect a nice home to be owned by a ni--" Carrie reached forward, clutching urgently at his arm. "I mean, a person from an urban area." Jerome growled, but kept silent.

They ate steaks and baked potato and freshly baked brown bread. Cooking, as ever, was a chore shared by Carrie and Jerome. Charlie and Jerome discussed sports; Cassie just stared at Jerome as if she were hypnotized.

"This was an excellent meal, Jerome. I never expected one of my daughters to settle down with a ... a ... a man of color," he finally blurted. "But if Carrie had to pick one, I guess I'm glad its you. Ivy League, banker -- hell, I'd almost hire you on that resume alone." Carrie cringed. Jerome steamed. But he'd heard worse and seen worse.

"Thanks, Charlie, I think."

After they left, Carrie sighed and rested her head against the wall. Jerome kissed her, and Carrie melted.

"Honestly, I expected worse," Jerome said. Carrie laughed.
