Do I Go Away?
Of Course But Not Far!
I knew that I should honor Sadie’s decision but something in me told me to stay and make her talk about last night. Then what Emily said came crashing back to me, “Seriously Dan, you don’t know when it’s time to leave things alone!”
Do I do that? Should I just leave Sadie to deal with the possible consequences of the frat party? I mean all I did was save her from a huge mistake that could ruin her life in the long run. I mean who was i to her, just a dorm mate who just realized that she meant more to me than anyone else who claimed to be family. Then I started to think of my consequences if I press the issue.
I sucked in a lungful of air, held it then slowly expelled it and answered her, “Fine but when you feel like talking you know where to find me!” Then I went back to the kitchen table and got my now cold coffee, inside feeling just as cold as it was. I sat down and tried to forget everything, failing miserably!
Roughly an hour later in the silence that settled in the dorm room while I sat on the left end of the couch, I heard the click of a lock and the slow opening of Sadie’s bedroom door. Then in a voice that was barely over a whisper, “I have no idea what I would have done if they...?”
“And I for one am damn glad that you’ll never have to figure that out!” Then as if it was an everyday occurrence, “Cup of coffee and something to eat?”
“I don’t think I could eat anything right now nor keep the coffee down, it feels like my stomach is doing flip flops!”
I patted the right side of where I was sitting and Sadie came over and sat down close to me. I didn’t try to hold her, but was greatly surprised when Sadie leaned her head onto my shoulder. “Im so confused as to what I should be doing and who I should be trusting!”
I didn’t want to damage any chance that I might have gained with Sadie by doing or saying the wrong thing, so I just sat there like a human statue. Then ever since I got her back here, I heard her say something that thrilled me inside. “Dan, would you hold me, until I quit shaking?”
I slowly moved my right arm from my side to place it around her shoulders. “Of course Sadie!”
Then we sat there like that for roughly five minutes, then out of the blue Sadie moved her head off my shoulder, turned her body still with my right arm draped over her shoulders. This is just a down payment on what I owe you!” Then she kissed me on the cheek.
Suddenly I wanted so much more from Sadie but didn’t want to ruin this moment!
