Chapter 40 by simmaster
How long do you have to wait?
Not long.
At first you find your indirect guard duty rather boring, but it doesn't even take an hour before you see shapes moving near the rock trap. Three of them, distinctly humanoid and heroic. That's your signal.
You break your connection to the watchman, and with the same nauseating warping sensation as before, you literally come to your senses. Shaking your head briefly to get used to inhabiting your own body again, you rush through the gate and cast Invisibility as you approach the trap.
Hiding in plain sight, you watch as the party of three walks towards the trap. There's a male warrior clad in half-plate, a rather plump-looking female bard, and a male rogue dressed in green, tight-fitting clothing which helps him blend in with the colours of the forest. He's the first to discover the obvious tripwire, and chuckles a little.
"Hey guys, watch this!" he calls back to his party, and goes on to pretend not to notice the trap. "Oh, look. A perfectly normal tree. How pleasant, I shall simply walk right underneath it to enjoy some pleasant shade!"
He then walks towards the tripwire as oblivious-looking as he can, before he leaps right over it. Or well... he WOULD have leaped right over it if it wasn't for you expecting him to do just that.
Stiffen.
Mid-jump, the rogue drops down paralyzed, falling on top of the tripwire and triggering the trap. The bundle of rocks crashes right down on top of him, and with an unpleasant crunch, he's gone.
The other heroes watch the spectacle play out before them, the bard slamming her palm into her face. "Did he seriously just fuck that up?"
"Looks like it," the warrior mutters in return.
You would love to let them believe you had nothing to do with that, but you do need to lead them towards the pit trap... Of course, maybe you could do so without revealing yourself.
Recasting Invisibility, you slip over to the trap and cast Minor Illusion, perfectly concealing the leaves covering the pit below and also making a goblin appear. Hopefully they won't notice the complete lack of movement until it's too late...
"Hey, look over there!" you hear the warrior shout. "One of those assholes must've set up that trap!"
Perfect. You watch him run towards you and your trap, the bard following.
"Wait!" you hear her yell after him. "I don't think that's really-"
She clearly saw through your trick, and manages to grab the warrior right before he would have stepped into your trap. Fortunately though, in doing so she put herself close enough to the edge...
Stiffen.
Her body freezes up, and due to being angled towards the trap, falls right through your illusion and into the pit below before the warrior can grab her.
"Fuck's sake, man!" she scolds him after the spell wears off. "Would you both be more careful?!"
"How was I supposed to know there were magic traps around here?!" the warrior yells back while you dispel the illusion, deciding that the jig is up. "There were only gonna be goblins here, they don't pull shit like this!"
...Then he looks up in your direction, squinting with sudden realization. Shit, your invisibility must've worn off. Welp, you might as well try to own it. You put on an act of confidence, waving at him with a sinister chuckle before casting Invisibility again, vanishing from his sight.
"Are you gonna help me out of this mess?" the bard asks impatiently.
"Hold on, I think I found the fucker who put you there..."
"YOU put me here, asshole!"
The warrior ignores his party mate, instead walking in your direction with his shield up, expecting you to attack from anywhere. He's keeping a distance from the pit, unfortunately. But if you can lure him over to a snare, you'll be able to paralyze him for long enough to take his sword away. Hopefully.
Then, your rescue arrives. The watchman must have finally alerted his fellow goblins of the approaching heroes, because a bunch of them come running in your direction with weapons and war cries. They take priority in the warrior's mind, and he starts cutting through them. With little difficulty, as one might anticipate.
Time to do what you do best and lend some support. A Shadow Trick to start with, making him miss most of his swings. Stiffen to let the goblins gang up on him for a few seconds, followed by a Spook to make him easy prey.
...At least, so you thought, but as he runs away screaming, you find that he's about as fast as the remaining goblins, and they in turn are much faster than you. Resulting in you being left behind. Damn it... You need to get back within casting range, and fast.
Another Invisibility and then you run after him as well, but your pitiful fitness ensures that you arrive too late. The warrior is no longer under your fear effect, and is finishing off the remaining goblins around him. Then he looks over at you again. Fuck, you need to remember just how short that spell's duration is...
You attempt to recast it, but nothing happens. You don't have enough mana. Well... fuck.
"You must be some special encounter, huh...?" the warrior says, twirling his bloodied sword and smirking at you. "I hope you got some fat loot to make your annoying ass worth it. I hate spellcaster monsters... I'm supposed to have Rion around for those, but you put her in a hole. So I'm gonna cut you up reaaal good..."
He looks pretty wounded, even limping a little, but you have no way of harming him and not even enough mana for another Spook or Stiffen... You even doubt your ability to outrun him despite his condition. And with no other goblins around, it looks like you're out of options...
Are you?

Game Monster
From Creep to Boss
You come into being as a low-level monster, the kind heroes chew through like popcorn. You know the drill, whether you're a player yourself or an artificial intelligence, and you're sick of it. You set out on your own quest: to defeat the heroes at any cost (or at least be an epic boss somewhere down the line).
