Chapter 7 by Obelx Obelx

Can you resist?

No

Jake sat there, staring at the blank text field in the app, the gears in his mind turning rapidly. The whole situation was absurd, surreal even. The idea that some random app could control his mom—his *mom*, of all people—seemed too crazy to believe. But the information on the screen was so specific, so detailed, that it was hard to dismiss entirely.

“Alright, let’s see if this thing is for real,” Jake muttered to himself, shaking his head at how ridiculous it all felt. He hesitated for a moment, then began typing into the text field:

**"Mom should buy me a new gaming PC."**

He hit enter, watching the screen intently. For a moment, nothing happened, and Jake felt a mix of relief and disappointment. But then, an error message flashed across the screen in bold red text:

**"Error: Subject resisted. Corruption too weak."**

Jake blinked, confused. “Corruption? What the hell does that mean?” he mumbled, frowning at the screen. So, his mom had resisted whatever the app was trying to do. He wasn’t sure whether to be relieved or frustrated.

Determined to see if the app did anything at all, he tried again, this time with something simpler:

**"Mom should buy me a new Iphone."**

Again, the same error message appeared:

**"Error: Subject resisted. Corruption too weak."**

Jake sighed, starting to feel like the whole thing was a waste of time. But his curiosity wouldn’t let him stop just yet. He decided to dial it back even further, trying to think of something so small that it wouldn’t seem suspicious or difficult.

He typed:

**"Mom should buy ice and bring it to me, then give me a hug longer than usual."**

Jake hit enter and waited, not expecting much. But this time, the screen didn’t flash with an error message. Instead, it displayed a simple confirmation:

**"Command accepted."**

Jake’s heart skipped a beat. He wasn’t sure what to expect, but the fact that the app had accepted the command was enough to make his pulse quicken. He closed out of the app, trying to push it to the back of his mind as he got ready for the rest of the evening.

Now we wait
