Chapter 7
by MastersEvil
Do you tell Mary about the ring?
No
As the nurse leaves the room to find the contact information for my new job, my thoughts drift back to the mysterious ring I found in my belongings. I weigh the pros and cons of sharing the information about the ring with the nurse. After much contemplation, I decide it's best to keep the ring a secret for now.
Nurse Mary returns with the contact number for my new job, and I thank her for her assistance. She leaves me alone in the room, giving me a moment to gather my thoughts and compose myself before making the call. My heart races at the prospect of speaking to someone from my new workplace, but I know it's a necessary step in addressing my situation.
Taking a deep breath, I dial the number and wait for someone to answer. After a few rings, a youthful, enthusiastic voice comes through the line.
"Hello! Thank you for calling Task Wysh Incorporated. How may I direct your call today?"
"Hi, I need to speak with someone from the Human Resources department. My name is {protagonist_name}, and I was supposed to start working at Task Wysh a few days ago, but I've had an accident."
"I'm so sorry to hear that, {protagonist_name}. Let me transfer you to our HR department right away. Please hold."
I listen to the hold music, my heart pounding in my chest, as I nervously wait to be connected to the HR representative. After a few minutes, the line clicks, and I hear a recorded message.
"Hello, you've reached the voicemail of the Human Resources department at Task Wysh Incorporated. We're unable to take your call at the moment, but please leave your name, number, and a brief message, and we'll get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you."
As the beep signals the start of the recording, I take another deep breath and begin to speak.
"Hi, my name is {protagonist_name}, and I was supposed to start working at Task Wysh a few days ago. Unfortunately, I've been involved in an accident and am currently in the hospital recovering. I wanted to inform you of my situation and discuss how it may impact my employment. I'm unable to use my personal phone at the moment, but you can reach me at..."
I pause, realizing that I don't know the name of the hospital or my room number. Glancing around the room, I spot a whiteboard on the wall with essential information written on it. I continue, reading the details off the board.
"...St. Merlow's Hospital, room number 415. I'm looking forward to your response and discussing how we can proceed. Thank you."
I end the call, hoping that my message will reach the HR department and that they will understand my situation. I stare at the whiteboard, realizing for the first time that today is four days later than my scheduled start date at Task Wysh. I feel a pang of anxiety in my chest, but there's nothing more I can do now other than wait and hope for the best.
Who enters the room next?
