### Premise

Velamma is a 38-year-old housewife living in a modest but respectable apartment complex. Her husband, Ramesh, works long hours at a private firm that has recently run into financial trouble. The building secretary and a few influential neighbors have begun offering “help”—small loans, job recommendations, reduced maintenance fees—always with quiet strings attached.

One evening the building secretary, Mr. Sharma (a heavy-set man in his late 50s), visits under the pretext of discussing the pending society dues. What begins as polite conversation slowly turns into an explicit proposition framed as mutual assistance. Velamma is given a choice: refuse and watch the pressure on her husband increase, or accept a private arrangement that keeps the household stable.

### Opening Choice

A. Reluctant Duty

Velamma agrees only because the family’s situation is becoming desperate. She intends to keep everything mechanical and detached.

B. Curious Concession

She has noticed the way certain men in the complex look at her. Part of her is curious what it would feel like to stop refusing.

C. Calculated Control

She decides that if this is going to happen, she will set the terms as much as possible—time, place, what is and is not allowed.
