Bill did not leave the room.
He stayed on his side of the bed, elbows on his knees, staring at the floor while Rebecca’s answer—“Yes, it’s still happening”—settled over both of them. The silence stretched, but he did not fill it with anger or accusations. When he finally spoke, his voice was steady and tired.
“Can it stop?”
Rebecca looked at him for a long moment. “I don’t know.”
“That’s not a no.”
“It’s also not a yes.” She pulled her legs up onto the bed and wrapped her arms around her knees. “I’ve told myself I would stop more than once. I meant it each time. Then the messages come, or I run into one of them, and I don’t stop.”
Bill nodded slowly, absorbing it. “So if I asked you right now to end it—delete the numbers, block them, refuse the next time they contact you—could you do it?”
“I could try.”
“Would you succeed?”
Rebecca’s mouth tightened. She looked away, then back. “I don’t know. And I don’t want to lie to you.”
Bill sat with that. He rubbed one hand across his jaw, then asked the next question without raising his voice.
“Can it continue with rules?”
Rebecca’s eyebrows lifted slightly. She had expected demands for it to end, or for him to walk out. She had not expected him to stay and negotiate.
“What kind of rules?” she asked.
“I don’t know yet. That’s why I’m asking. Frequency. Who. Where. Whether I know about it beforehand. Whether I see anything after. Whether you come home and tell me, or whether you keep it completely separate. I’m trying to figure out if there’s a version of this that doesn’t destroy what’s left of us.”
Rebecca was quiet for several seconds. When she answered, her voice was lower.
“You’d actually consider letting it continue?”
“I’m considering the fact that it’s already continuing,” Bill said. “And that telling you to stop might just turn it into something you hide better. I’d rather have honesty and some kind of boundary than another six months of wondering why you come home late and why we haven’t had sex.”
He looked at her directly.
“Does she want it to continue?” He corrected himself. “Do you want it to continue?”
Rebecca exhaled slowly. She did not rush the answer.
“Part of me does,” she said. “The part that feels wanted in a way I haven’t felt in a long time. The part that likes how they look at me, how they take me, how different it is from… this.” She gestured vaguely at the quiet bedroom, at the two of them. “And part of me hates it. Hates that I’ve let it go this far. Hates that I’m sitting here telling my husband I might not be able to stop.”
“Which part is stronger right now?”
“I don’t know. They trade places depending on the day.”
Bill leaned back against the headboard. The lamp on her nightstand cast a soft yellow circle across the sheets. He stared at it while he asked the last question.
“What do you actually want from me now?”
Rebecca blinked. The question seemed to land harder than the others.
“I want you to stay,” she said finally. “I know that sounds selfish. I know I don’t have the right to ask for it after everything. But I still love you. I don’t want to lose the marriage. I also don’t want to keep lying. So I guess what I want is for us to find out whether both of those things can exist at the same time.”
Bill was silent for a long while. When he spoke again, the words came carefully, like he was testing each one before releasing it.
“If we do this—if we try rules—I need certain things.”
“Tell me.”
“I need to know who. Not vague. Names.”
Rebecca hesitated only a second. “Taylor. Lavon. Debo.”
Bill’s jaw tightened, but he nodded. “How often.”
“It varies. Sometimes once a week. Sometimes more. Sometimes nothing for ten days, then twice in one weekend.”
“Do they know about each other?”
“Taylor and Lavon know the other exists. Debo doesn’t care who else is involved as long as he gets what he wants.”
“And me?” Bill asked. “Do any of them know I exist?”
Rebecca’s voice dropped. “Debo does. He’s made comments. Taylor suspects. Lavon doesn’t ask.”
Bill closed his eyes for a moment. When he opened them, he looked older.
“I need time to think about the rest of the rules,” he said. “But I can already tell you a few. If this continues, I don’t want it in our bed. Not this bed. Not this house if we can help it. I want to know when it’s going to happen—before, not after. And I want the option of seeing what happened afterward. Photos. Videos. A description. I don’t know yet which one. Maybe all of them. Maybe none. But I want the option.”
Rebecca studied his face. “You’re asking to be involved.”
“I’m asking not to be erased,” Bill said. “There’s a difference.”
She nodded slowly. “Okay.”
“And I need you to be honest when you can’t keep a rule. Don’t break it and then hide it. Tell me you broke it. I’d rather deal with the failure than the lie.”
“I can do that.”
Bill looked at her for a long time. The anger he had expected to feel was present, but it sat beside something quieter and more complicated—grief, arousal, a strange exhausted clarity.
“I’m not agreeing to anything permanent tonight,” he said. “I’m agreeing to try talking about it instead of pretending it’s not happening. That’s all I have right now.”
Rebecca reached across the space between them and rested her fingers lightly against the back of his hand. He did not pull away.
“That’s more than I expected,” she said.
They sat in silence after that. The house settled around them. Somewhere outside a car passed. Bill turned his hand over and let her fingers rest against his palm. Neither of them spoke for a long time.
Eventually Rebecca asked, very quietly, “Are you going to look at the pictures again?”
Bill’s answer was honest.
“Yes.”
She nodded, as if she had already known.
“I’ll leave the phone unlocked,” she said.
Bill did not thank her. He simply kept her hand in his and stared at the far wall, already feeling the shape of the new arrangement forming—fragile, temporary, and the only version of the truth either of them could stand that night.
