More Context: Magical Families

(A/N: This was put under Taylor's entry because she is actually from a major magical family herself, however was disowned when it was found out she was infertile.)

Its unknown when humans gained the ability to cast magic, but it is widely known that it can be inherited and the more powerful the parents the more powerful the children. This quickly formed the magical politics as they are today, families quickly formed around the pairings of powerful couples. While power is a big factor for a mage there is still the need to know how to manipulate that power. Therefore it is early in life when children are tested for their magical manipulation abilities and their education begins.

This means that the families have vast stores of magical knowledge. Wandering mages or mages from smaller families 'Join' the more powerful ones for education.

Wars between the magical families have happened in the past, to quickly restore their numbers they used aphrodisiacs to **** the captured females to have children. Though this isn't what they are used for now days. With aphrodisiacs being illegal they only find use in more 'traditional' houses where matchmaking is a common practice or in families that are already doing things much more illegal than just using aphrodisiacs.

Families know it is important to raise their children, however if a child is found to not have the ability or (if they are part of a large family) limited ability to manipulate magic they are neglected in favor of the more promising ones. This creates a social gap pushing them out of their families. some of these neglected children go on to live relatively normal lives either losing the ability of magic entirely with their children or forming a small magical family where their children will leave to go get more magical knowledge usually from the family that their parents left from. Most however aren't satisfied knowing the power that is out there and find ways to increase their power separately from their families.

Due to their upbringing they end up fairly cruel and uncaring, many a family has been overturned when one of these people return much more powerful. However there hasn't been any recording of this happening to the major families, as the knowledge they have increases the strength they have enough that it would take multiple lifetimes for their power to become greater. Way before that though they'd have already formed another family and it would be another magical war down the line on old grudges that both families had forgotten.

Because magical abilities are inherited the most looked down upon are the ones that are infertile or sterile for whatever reason. There's no way they'd be able to take over a magical family while being unable to have children but that doesn't mean that they aren't capable of being incredibly powerful. It isn't unheard of for them to take advantage of their inability and accept contracts from sexual demons to increase their own power. Some end up adopting a neglected child of a family and pass along their contracts and knowledge to them as if they were their own child.
