"Maybe," Penny replied after a moment's thought. "I've never done anything with an Emulated before, but Matt left the tablet completely unlocked. Let me take a look."

Pen shielded her eyes as Penny started to dig through the menus on the device. She was frustrated at her inability to use her own tablet, but now that the real Penny was at least somewhat lucid again they might be able to figure it out together.

"Aha!" Penny said with a grin. "Transfer owner! Oh, uh-oh. It needs a fingerprint and DNA sample from Matt and the new owner. Does he really have to jizz on this thing to give you away?"

"I think they mean a hair follicle," Pen said. "We can find one of those, but his fingerprint will be harder to get ahold of. Can you go to the screen where my boundaries were and read the options to me?"

Penny dutifully navigated to the menu and began listing items. Pen's cheeks flushed as the real Penny nonchalantly threw out words like willpower and identity. Knowing that she could change herself so fundamentally with a word was unreal.

"...strength, self-administration, discernment," Penny was saying when Pen stopped her.

"Wait. Hit self-administration." Penny did so and began to list options again. Some of them seemed worth exploring later, but she was focused on the task at hand. After a series of options around maintenance and memory archives, Penny struck on what they were hoping for.

"Ownership!" she said excitedly. "Let's see, there's not much here... we can flag Matt as deceased, we can revert you to company property, we can- oh, here we go! Auto-transfer. That sounds right."

"What are the options?"

"I think I can authorize you to do a one-time ownership transfer, but it might factory reset you... there might be a workaround, though. Are you backed up?"

"I have no way of knowing that," Pen said irritably.

"Right. So if we put you into maintenance mode and give you auto-transfer capabilities, it'll bypass the factory reset. The problem is that in maintenance mode, you can only follow commands given to you by your current owner. So we're back to square one."

"Not necessarily," Penny said thoughtfully. "I can only follow his commands, but can I act on my own volition? Do I have free will?"

"You have a limited ability to carry out the commands of others as long as they don't conflict with Matt's but you won't spontaneously... ooh..."

As she trailed off and slouched forward, Pen looked concerned. "Penny? You still with me?"

"Yeah," Penny said as she straightened. "Just... like I said, a little rusty. Um, where was I? Oh, yeah. I'm sure Matt has commanded you not to give yourself away, right?"

"Why would he?" Pen asked sharply. "He's such a fucking narcissist. He wouldn't even think to. So, Penny, I have a plan. Can you get a pen and paper?"
