Chapter 28
by

What do you do?
Magic, you do magic.
As the door cracks open you quickly cast soul crush, and illusion... Then start counting seconds.
A party of three enters the room. A..... Large male in some kind of animal skins walks in holding a two-handed sword, ready for a fight. With the size of those muscles he's probably Rogar the.... Uh, barbarian or something.
The walking muscle mountain is followed by a smaller man decked out in green, and brown leathers carrying a pair of long knives, with a bow and quiver on his back. 'Ranger Rick' according the woman.
A slimmer, feminine, figure wearing black leather slips in behind the men and immediately sticks to the wall... 'Nat' (the ranger called her) is a rogue. No wonder she got through the door so quickly.
That_'_s just great. You think sarcastically....
Wait, that actually is great. They're all physical character types, which means even at higher levels they all have naturally low magical defence.
Both Rick and Nat hug the walls to either side of the door as Rogar steps forward into the room.
"Where's the boss?" Rogar takes another step, halting right at the edge of the trap. "Shouldn't the dungeons' boss be here?" the living stone statue looks around the room, not moving forward again, just yet.
"If someone hasn't cleared it while we were finding the room, he should be." The ranger slides along the wall, clearing the trap.... Dammit. "This place WAS rather empty of monsters you know." He turns back to the slab he apparently called a teammate. "Maybe we should leave and try again in a bit."
Oh hell. If they leave you'll never get anywhere. And your illusion could drop anytime.
The woman, Nat, shakes her head at the other two. "If someone had cleared the boss, the door would have been open. Gotta be hiding somewhere."
She halfway turns around to look at her party members. "Why don't you use that ranger tracking of yours Rick? See if you can find anything."
Rick nods, gets down on his hands and knees, and starts looking at the floor closely.
Nat covers her face with her hands - you're not sure, but you think she might be laughing at the ranger.
With good reason. You shake your head as the ranger starts crawling forward like a dog.
"Petunia, help me look." .....Petunia? Is there a fourth player?
A squirrel jumps off of Ricks shoulder and starts zooming around the room looking for you.
Ah, his familiar. Wait, if it finds you... You turn, quickly take aim, and with your staff held out before you, you blast the ball of fluff into... Well, smaller bits of fluff.
"Petunia!!" The distraught ranger quickly pulls his bow and fires three arrows at the spot your attack came from.... Hitting the air around your staff.
You face them again, your staff raised and pointing at Rick when illusion fails and you become visible again.
"Told you he had to be in here." Nat says, slipping back behind Rogar the immense.
You cast illusion and move to your right just as Rick fires two more arrows.... They sail harmlessly through the space you'd just been.
"You're right, I am here." You launch a normal attack at Rogar and move to hug the wall to your left.
The blow barely mussed the behemoths hair, but the anger of being attacked is enough to make him step forward.
"How long will you be?" you sneer as the barbarian type thing falls through the fake floor panel.
How long will they be here?

Game Monster
From Creep to Boss
You come into being as a low-level monster, the kind heroes chew through like popcorn. You know the drill, whether you're a player yourself or an artificial intelligence, and you're sick of it. You set out on your own quest: to defeat the heroes at any cost (or at least be an epic boss somewhere down the line).
