Julia and Henry were eating lunch at a Chinese restaurant near the law firm where they both worked as non-equity partners. Julia was up for equity partner, but she was up against Hailey Brooks, a no-nonsense, surly, career-driven woman.

"Hailey threatened me in the restroom," said Julia.

"Really? Physically?"

"No, she said if I did not tank my interview, and she got equity partner anyway, she'd make my life a living hell."

"Damn, she's ruthless, and I assume no witnesses."

"Do you think she's that careless?"

"Hell no."

"Rumor has it someone crossed her in law school, and he was never seen again. Ooooo!"

"Very funny," said Julia. "There are many rumors of her ruthlessness though."

"So what are you going to do?"

"Nothing different. I can't let her scare me. She did accuse me of slipping a laxative into her coffee."

"Oh my god, that was so funny!" said Henry. "I wonder if someone did spike her coffee or she just had explosive diarrhea. She barely made it out of the conference room."

"She would not believe it was not me. She never believes anything I say."

The waitress brought the bill and two fortune cookies. Julia cracked hers open.
