Kick and Bang on the Door

Annoyed, Lydia kicks the door while pounding on it until, after a minute, a man answers. He looks surprised and annoyed.

Lydia holds up the paper showing why she was there. "Does magic interfere with doorbells, or did you just invest in soundproofing?"

"Neither," he replied sheepishly as his annoyance melted away. "I may have gotten lost in setting things up. Please come in."

Lydia followed him into the loft apartment and marvelled at all the magical-looking thingamajigs and whatnot scattered about. Books and papers lay everywhere, covering the sofa and bed. The only 'clean' spot was a circle painted on the floor, surrounded by crystals.

"What are we summoning today?" Lydia didn't need to work hard to guess what it was. "Or are we transmuting something?" Lydia realized she should maybe think a bit harder before opening her mouth.

"Oh, summoning. I hope. As to what I summon, well, that depends on my mood." He replied, doing some last-minute setup with candles around the room. "You can't summon with lightbulbs on. They have a habit of exploding, and you don't want glass to fly everywhere when you are doing this.

"What are you in the mood to summon?" Lydia couldn't make sense of most of what she saw as she stood still where he left her.

"If my guess is correct, it isn't a conscious decision. I won't know until after it happens. Be ready. Just stay there." He said, pulling his arms free from his robe to make wild gestures as energy swirled around him.

"Cuddly bunnies," Lydia said quietly, repeatedly, as she watched and waited.

There was a tornado of light in the circle, and with a puff of smoke, the energy went out of the room. Lydia thought it a bit anticlimactic. They saw a strange fluffy creature hopping around the floor when the smoke disappeared. It was like someone took the cutest parts of a bunny and a ferret and merged them.

"Oh my god!" Lydia dropped down to pet the fluffy thing.

"That worked really well." The sorcerer stated. "I should get a phonograph or something. Play voices or music to control my emotions like your muttering did. You turned out better than I expected."

"What's going to happen to him now?" Lydia cuddled the thing that crawled into her arms as she fell over in bliss.

"De-summoning is painful and abrupt for both involved. So we had best wait it out so he could just return on his own." The sorcerer regarded the squealing girl on his floor and the animal she was petting. "Since the spell worked, and he is an animal, I can anchor a portal scroll to him. Hang it up where you live, and it will work like a pet door. Consider it an extra reward for giving me insight into how to focus an emotional summon spell."

Lydia giggled her assent. After the creature faded away to return home, she pouted but eagerly took the scroll and her payment. Rushing back to the hotel, she quickly set it up in her room, and soon enough, her fluffy friend came through to share some room service.
