Kentaro's Story

After meeting Mei, I began to put feelers out into the prefecture for anyone else that had experienced similar events or at least noticed the symbol she described in her story. To my surprise, there were more than just the one symbol around the prefecture and to my greater surprise, Mei’s boyfriend Kentaro and his family had more than the one experience with the symbols. When Kentaro came to see me, I became aware that once a family encountered the symbol, it seemed to “infect” their entire bloodline.

Kentaro seemed either unaware on unwilling to talk about the events described by Mei, but he approached me with a different series of strange circumstances. What he described is dramatically different than Mei’s experience, but I could see the similarities. Hopefully you can see them too.

It was coming up on the Obon festival in Midoriyama-shi which is a few weeks prior to the national holiday as a special tradition in the Kazehikoe prefecture. Like most practices, Obon is a time for the family to come together, and such was the case for Kentaro’s family. The preparations at their house were the usual and revolved around making space for visiting family. As you can imagine, family gatherings in Kazehikoe are big events since almost everyone is related, and such was the case with Kentaro’s family who had members coming to stay from neighboring villages.

On the day of the incident, Kentaro was busying himself cleaning an organizing several spaces in their home along with others who were helping with the preparations. There was some members of his family that had come a little early and some neighbors that would likely wander over to sample the family’s feasts. Eventually, Kentaro was tasked by his stepmother to clear the extra room that his father typically used as an office. It was not intended as such, but his father would use the room for some quiet away from the family. Kentaro entered the room without question since his family had no pretences that room was private in any way.

The room was full of small items, mostly trinkets, that his father had been gathering for some reason, but there was something different about these trinkets. They all contained proto-petroglyph chinese characters, things often found in antiquity. Some were tourist items from various temples and others appeared to have been crafted by his father. It seemed as though Junichi was obsessed with a particular symbol and had been trying to recreate in the various things around him.

Eventually, Kentaro’s eyes fell upon something that dredged up thoughts and memories, things that he couldn’t describe, some things that he had denied, and some things that he had never considered. It was like a voice was speaking to him, but within his own thoughts, forcing his to dig deep into her feelings and discover things about himself that he’d never confronted before.

The world shifted and changed around him with these new realizations and when he blinked his eyes, the room of trinkets seemed to take on a new meaning. The characters were the same as before, but with his new thoughts and memories, they seemed to hold some kind of different significance for him and as he contemplated these things, his thoughts disappearing into a mist of unreality, he did not notice that someone entered the room with him until they reached out and touched.
