“You’re just not good enough for me, Jim. You’re a pathetic little man who will never amount to anything. Darren can give me what I deserve, and he’s going to go places you could never dream of.” The petite brunette woman said without a hint of love in her green eyes. The woman was probably a foot shorter than you, but she seemed to tower over you with her harsh words.

Her arms were crossed under her chest after tossing you documents. She looked at you as if just speaking to you was a task she could barely stomach.

“We’re done. If you need to contact me about the proceedings, have your lawyer contact mine. Otherwise, lose my number.”

You looked down defeated and unable to get any words out. The crushing weight of your current situation almost paralyzed your vocal chords. It felt as if she was standing with her heel on your throat.

“Please, Steph…” is all you managed to say.

She flashed you another disgusted look and stomped off, slamming the door to what was once your loving family home. You stared down at the stack of papers on the coffee table in front of you. The word “divorce” clearly printed on the cover. Numerous colored tabs jutted out from the pages marking places that required your signature.

The whole thing was such a whirlwind. How did she go from happy to hating me so quickly? Was this all my fault? Why am I not good enough? These thoughts and worse pounded in your brain as you began to reach for the papers.

Your vision blurred as tears welled in your eyes, and you swore you heard the woman’s voice again chastising you for crying. You sobbed uncontrollably from the pain in your chest as you picked up the pen she had left on the table. The weight was heavy, and you fought your way through the tears signing each page.

The more you signed, signaling your approach toward the end of your decade-long marriage, the more your grief turned to anger. The cerulean blue ink of the pen began to change to crimson red as if your rage manifested. Pain shot through your body once more as your blood began to boil.

“Pathetic.” A familiar yet unrecognizable voice called out in your head.

You had done everything for this woman! You supported her financially since you had started dating in high school. Even in college, you worked as a bouncer, overnight security, and as a tutor on top of your coursework just to keep you both afloat. Meanwhile, Stephanie pursued one whim after another. She changed jobs so often that you could never rely on steady income from her. She’d get bored, decide to quit out of the blue, and just “follow her heart” to whatever her next venture was. Her choices created a lot of stress for you, but you loved her and persevered.

After graduation, you got hired as an electrical engineer. The pay was decent, and the stress of her career changes wasn’t really an issue after that. She eventually went back to college to get her accounting degree. You worked full time, paid all the bills, ate up your savings to pay for her schooling, cooked her meals, took her on dates, and tried your best to make her feel like the most important person in the world. You never once forgot a special occasion or anniversary, and you were utterly devoted to her.

Surprisingly, Stephanie had stuck with college. She eventually graduated and got a good job working for an insurance company. Things were looking good, at least for a little while.

Then she met that fucking bastard, Darren.

You seethed as his image appeared in front of you. He was younger than you and objectively better looking.

You were thirty-five now and no longer had the body you once did. You weren’t obese per se, but you had a chubby face and what many would consider a “dad bod”. You had a strong upper body and a bit of a belly, but you always thought you looked decent for your age.

Darren was a well-built man with chiseled features in his early twenties. He was working his way up the company ladder, and by all accounts was a rising star with a bright future.

His phantom smirked at you with a mocking smile.

He had met your wife at work and had twisted her mind, turning her against you. You had seen how easily he had gotten her to disparage you in the text messages you had found. A part of you believed that confronting her with the evidence of her infidelity would have sparked a desire in her to fix the marriage. It hadn’t. Instead, it had been the catalyst for her to finally decide to leave you.

You had no idea until it was too late that Stephanie had been siphoning off your bank accounts and assets. When she had finished school, she asked to take over management of household finances. It made sense to you at the time given her degree. For once, it felt like Stephanie was finally taking some of the burden off your shoulders. You had no reason to believe she would do what she had done.

You hated Stephanie for betraying your trust. You hated Darren for ruining your marriage. You wanted to reach out and strangle that human garbage until his eyes bulged out of his head. You wanted her to realize she made a mistake and come crawling back. You wanted to hear them beg for forgiveness.

Your head swam with fury, the room began spinning as they laughed at you, and then darkness engulfed everything.
