Chapter 6

How well does it work?
It works perfectly
"I am now Thomas and Diana Miller's Au Pair." She said, her voice coming out much softer and sweeter than sounded normal.
"Holy shit, is that what I sounded like? Man it's so weird to see my old body." Diana said.
"Oh my! I am terribly sorry Mrs. Miller, I didn't mean to upset you." Our new au pair said putting a hand over her mouth making a comically demure tableau.
"No dear, you didn't upset me at all. Just surprised me." Diana said, a wave of relief washing over her and bubbling out as laughter.
"I believe I understand. I have memories of being Diana Miller. She was most unhappy when I was her. I can imagine you might still be adjusting to your new body, and all of your new memories." the au pair said.
"What about you? How do you feel about being, uh, well... you? Do you have any new memories to cope with?" Tom said, curious about how the magic worked with such a vague prompt.
"Oh not at all." she said, smiling from inside my wife's former body. "I certainly have a host of new skills I can employ in my new role. I know that I suddenly have greater skills when it comes to cooking, cleaning, and childrearing. I also know that my own capacity for empathy has greatly increased. As their mother I didn't care for Michael or Jessica. However as their au pair I can assure you I am filled with affection for them, and will do everything in my power to help care for your children. However my personality only currently extends to what is needed to perform my task. I do not feel any oddness about this situation. I am happy to be employed by you for however long you see fit."
"See!" Diana said. "Now she isn't nobody anymore, and we haven't emptied out anyone else's body. If we need to make any modifications we have plenty more stickers."
Tom just shook his head in disbelief.
"So she's like a robot?" Tom said.
"That is inaccurate. I may have a more limited personality as the character assigned to me is based on my profession, however I do have a new role to play. Mrs. Miller was wise to give me my current identity. I believe her assessment was correct. As part of my new identity I understand compassion far better than I did when I was being Diana. Sophia's position as a mental health professional would not have been a good fit for me. So whether or not it is a result of the sticker, I currently exist as my own entity. And though I know my compassion comes from this sticker, I still genuinely feel a strong desire to help nurture your children."
"See!" Diana said now waving at her old body as it performed a little curtsy.
"But what's your name?" Tom said.
"I am Tom and Diana Miller's Au Pair. I don't feel the need for a name." she said.
"She doesn't want one Tom. Listen to the woman. Listen to me. Until you know what being given a sticker is like, I ask you not to judge and to trust both of our experiences. Okay? Because this is getting old." Diana said.
"There's that impatient woman I fell in love with." Tom said.
"I told you, Dr. Kahn's memories only go so far." She said wrapping her hands around her husband's waist. "Look at this. Au pair, how does seeing me and my husband together make you feel?"
"It is very romantic to see you two get along so well. I think it will have a very positive impact on Michael and Jessica's development. And Tom it is sweet of you to worry about me. If you want me to have more of a personality I will be happy to start developing one. You can add or adjust me as you see fit, but I will naturally develop the more people I talk to. You can even name me if you think it's important." the au pair said.
What do Tom and Diana do with their newest 'employee'?
