Can you break the spell?
It works, and you break the spell
You do the only thing you can do. You plug your ears and scream. The music haunts you, lingers across your mind in a drifting melody that makes you want to do little more than gaze out into the crowd and watch Alexandra's strange pirouettes and arcs, but you plug your ears, only increasing the volume of the scream. Your false voice resounds through the tent, its pitch barely loud enough to prevent the strange chimes from touching your brain. It feels like you're fighting against an invisible fog, cutting through a misty veil that has enraptured everyone else.
And all the while, Alexandra Parry dances as if she'll never stop, entranced.
You stagger from table to table, knocking over plates and bumping into people, but nobody seems to even notice, so caught up are they in the strange dance. This is high tech stuff, you realize. Some would call it magic, but Gunther used to talk about the different permutations and possibilities of acoustic weaponry. Such a thought, he used to say, was as old as time itself. The Greeks knew it as a siren: the haunting melody making people oblivious to the calamity.
You continue screaming. Screaming until your jaw aches. Screaming as you force your way toward your only salvation. Whoever is doing this must have 'made' you now, but you're sure you've spotted them, too: an ear plug in the crowd. It's too hard to concentrate on who it was at the moment, though. You just continue to force your way past mesmerized guests, toward...
You stumble and fall, just short of your goal. Your ears are uncovered, and the entrancing music fills your head again. Mechanically, your head begins to turn toward Alexandra, even from your prone position. You can't fight it this time. All you can do is reach out with your hands, fumbling, grasping, tugging...
The music stops. You turn, shocked to see you managed to do it. You've pulled out the plug socket. Everyone stands for a moment, unsure what they were doing. Carma staggers back into the party, none the worse for - literally - wear, and Alexandra finishes her dance and looks utterly bemused. Amid the confused faces you recognize at least one frustrated scowl. You stagger to your feet, walk to the music deck, and retrieve the CD. Seconds later you smash it in your palm, and rush out of the room.
The Carma suit wasn't the organization's doing. The room switch, the way down... it was a trap. A trap you fell for, and managed to get out of. Someone else is here, playing a high stakes game with you. They want the Bloom too, and now they know who you are. You're pretty sure you've identified them, but that doesn't mean they won't switch identities too. Behind you, guests are clapping Alexandra's 'performance' - although you doubt they realize what they are clapping. Other guests are talking about entertainment, even more are heading to the resort's toilets. The sun has set, and it's dark in the surrounds.
You've got a few options. Grabbing another disguise seems to make sense - you're recognized and if you're going to get the Bloom you'll have to go unnoticed, both by the guests and your rivals. That will be hard - especially given how everyone in this crazy wedding seems to be up to something. Alternatively, you could move against your rivals. They might have all the advantages, but you have a few tricks up your sleeve too. As a worst case scenario you could wait for things to play out, and either retrieve the Bloom from Carma's scheme, or obtain it from Alexandra as she and Holden head to their suite later.
What now?
