Chapter 9
by Hellena
Time to panic, or stick to the plan?
It's too late to back out.
You could run now, certainly. She was a sex demon, so you were probably faster, right? And you'd have a pretty big head start. If she'd even chase you at all; she was a succubus, not, like, a werewolf or something. She didn't eat people. Literally. Probably. ...Fuck, staying was sounding like an increasingly worse idea...
But, no. No. Going in there was undoubtedly dangerous, but currently, Ms. Devlin didn't know that you had anything of note planned. If you ran now, for no discernable reason, you'd attract her suspicion. As it was now, she was just your teacher, with a bizarre teaching style, who was almost-probably-certainly trading in souls. She wasn't, like, hunting people on the streets or anything. Once she stopped being your teacher, neither of you were of any concern to each other.
But if you put up a fuss now... Well, she was a demon. One who looked like she was currently racking up a lot of favor. Just this afternoon, you saw a half-dozen blissed out fangirls-in-the-making stagger out of her office. If Ms. Devlin asked her students to keep an eye on you or something, they'd probably do it. At best, you'd be under surveillance the rest of your college career. At worst, she'd find an excuse to get you expelled just so that she wouldn't have to think about you again.
Meanwhile, if you went in there... Well, she didn't know that you had anything of note planned. You could go in there, ask if there was any way out of the assignment, and leave. Go and talk to Taylor and Wyatt, tell them that screwing with a demon was the stupidest thing any of you had ever done, and talk them into dropping the class. Beg, if you had to - you didn't know Wyatt that well, but you knew that a few tears would keep Taylor from doing anything stupid.
...Right? You felt a pit in your stomach as you thought of what came next if you backed out now. Taylor had wanted to take care of this herself, and you hadn't really talked her out of it. And even now, if you went back, what would you tell her, exactly? "I saw a lot of sluts stumbling out of Ms. Devlin's office, it seemed dodgy so I ran"? You knew what you had seen, that nervous students were clearly sleeping with Ms. Devlin and some were selling their souls... But you also knew what that would sound like to anyone you told - like a fat lot of nothing.
...Ms. Devlin didn't know what you had planned. Not everyone who came out looked like they sold their souls. And she was almost certainly willing to sleep with you as well. The original plan... It could still work. You might walk out a lot more messed up than you had expected a few hours ago, but if you got the tape... This would all be over.
And even if you failed... You'd protect Taylor from making your mistakes, right? She was your best friend, and the two of you had gone through a lot together. Sometimes she protected you, sometimes you protected her. Sometimes she helped you, sometimes you helped her. And all too often, each of you acted before telling the other. If you backed out of this now, and she tried to deal with Ms. Devlin herself... You don't know that you could ever forgive yourself for letting her down like that.
Here, now, you had to make a choice, as you opened the door. It was too late to back out, and you'd dramatically underestimated the stakes involved. But you still had a choice.
Do you trust Taylor to listen to you, and back away from the Devlin problem?
Or do you do what you can to deal with Ms. Devlin yourself, knowing that any outcome would still protect Taylor?
You two were always sacrificing yourself to save each other. Who's today's sacrifice?
