What's next?
It's Getting Messy
Later that night, Claire woke up. She didn't know what had disturbed her sleep.
The house lay in complete darkness. Wind rattled the shutters.
Claire found Daniel in the living room looking at the screen of his phone. The wan light made him look like a ghost. He glanced up.
Big mistake.
Claire stood barefoot in the semidarkness wearing that same oversized shirt, bare legs pale in the half-dark.
Daniel looked away too slowly.
Claire walked toward him.
The atmosphere between them felt unstable now. Like standing too close to collapsing ice.
“You should go back upstairs,” Daniel said quietly.
But there was no authority left in it anymore.
Claire stopped directly in front of him.
“And if I don’t?”
Daniel set the phone down carefully.
Too carefully. Like he needed both hands free to stop himself from touching her.
“You’re killing me.”
The confession came out almost ragged.
Claire’s pulse accelerated.
She touched his wrist lightly.
That was all.
Daniel reacted instantly.
His hand caught her waist with startling ****, pulling her against him before either of them seemed fully conscious of moving.
And suddenly they were kissing again.
**** this time.
Messier.
His restraint shattered all at once. Shirt buttons coming loose.
Claire felt herself stumble against the couch as Daniel followed her automatically, kissing her like he hated himself for wanting it and wanted it anyway. His hands moved against her sides with visible hesitation, every touch conflicted even while his control dissolved.
The room blurred into heat, breathing and fading light.
His hands moved over her with visible hesitation, every touch delayed by guilt and chased by hunger.
As he finally unveiled her body, he looked at her like he couldn’t decide whether she was temptation or salvation.
Claire felt his restraint breaking in fragments — in the roughness of his breathing, in the way his composure vanished every time she pulled him closer.
She guided him, set the pace. Her fingers tangled in his hair as he leaned into her, his weight pressing her back into the couch, the cold leather a sharp contrast against her hot skin.
“Oh, Daniel, please…” she whispered.
He hesitated, then breathed her name like it hurt. His movements more **** than smooth. His grip at her waist tightened, harder than necessary.
And when the moment finally broke, Claire had to bite down on her own breath.
Overwhelmed less by the act itself than by the realization that he had stopped trying to stop.
Afterward, silence filled the living room except for the rain clattering against the windows.
Claire lay tangled against him, pulse still racing.
Ever since that fateful moment at the front door she had imagined this moment.
She wanted proof. The certainty that she had been right about him all along:
That it wasn't her who had the problem, but him.
Yet now that it had happened, the triumph she expected felt strangely incomplete.
Daniel sat on the edge of the couch with his head in his hands.
Claire had never seen him look smaller.
Never seen him look defeated.
A knot tightened unexpectedly in her chest.
This wasn't the arrogant wannabe father who lectured her, criticized her choices and treated her like a child. This was simply Daniel torn by conflicting emotions.
And for a moment she found herself wondering whether she had wanted him to break quite this badly.
Yes, she had won. But at what cost?
"What have we done?" he muttered. “Emily must never find out. Promise me.“
The question lingered between them.
And she wondered what she really wanted.
Freedom?
Or ****?

Stay Home Tonight
Some boundaries are meant to be crossed.
When Claire Mercer moves back into her mother's suburban home, she expects temporary inconvenience, not a war of wills with her stepfather, Daniel. At first, Claire thinks he's being overprotective. Then she realizes he's jealous. What begins as a reckless attempt to expose his hypocrisy turns into a dangerous game of manipulation, and obsession.
