Irina Romanov, a young college student about to start a new life with her American boyfriend

You suddenly wake up, confused. You hear an unfamiliar male voice from somewhere just out of sight. You try to lean up but a you are stopped by a sharp wave of pain.

A doctor rushes to your side. “No! Don’t move! You are still recovering from the operation.”

You are confused, but obey the doctor's command. You look around and realize you are in a hospital room.

“Where am I?” You ask.

You hear the doctor chuckle.

“You are in the hospital. You were in an accident. Don’t worry you are safe now.”

“Can I call my family? They must be worried sick about me!” You say.

“Don’t worry. They... won't be expecting you home anytime soon.” He looks at you with a concerned look on his face. “I'm sorry to tell you this, but you. Well, your body was killed in a car accident."

"My body? What do you mean?"

He looks at you with pity. "When you arrived, the trauma to your body was too much to save. You were hit by a taxi cab that just picked up a young Russian woman from the airport. Unfortunate for her, but fortunate for you. The same accident barely caused her to suffer a traumatic brain injury but spared the rest of her body. We did what we could to revive her, but the damage was too far gone before she made it to the hospital. " He placed his arm on your shoulder. "I know this is hard to hear, but the only way to save your life was to transplant your brain into her body."

"WHAT!? Is this a joke?" You try to sit up. "My brain! In a woman's body?!"

"Please, try to relax. The less stress you put on your body, the better."

The doctor holds up a mirror and you are shocked by your own reflection. Your new face is a woman's. Her skin is soft, her long dark hair frames her face, and her eyes are are a piercing emerald green. You are stunned into silence by your new reflection.

“Don’t worry,” the doctor says. "Lucky for you, your new boyfriend contact the hospital the moment he heard about the accident." He laughed to himself. "Luckily for you, he was at home preparing to meet Irina for the first time."

"What are you talking about?" I winced at the word 'boyfriend'.

"Your new name is Irina Romanov and you are here on a student visa. A nice young man named William called to tell us that you and him have been talking through a dating app for the past few months. He agreed to allow you to live with him in his apartment while you start studying psychology at the nearby college in a few months and your body was on its way to meet him in person for the first time when the accident happened."

The doctor handed you a purse. "It seems that everything William knows about Irina is on your dating profile and chat logs. You will need to rest for a few more days, and we will make sure you are left undisturbed so you can learn about your new life and body at your own pace."

You stare blankly at the cellphone. This was it, the entirety of your new life was contained on some vapid dating profile.

“I am nurse Hua." A cute woman walked into the room. “I know this has to be weird, but you are very lucky to get such a beautiful body. Irina is quite stunning, yes?”

You barely knew what you looked like. “I'm sorry, I’m so overwhelmed right now.” You sit up a little to get a better look at yourself.

“I am sorry to tell you this, but this type of surgery is not something we can tell the public about. You aren't the first person to undergo this type of transplant, but if you let anyone know about it, there is a very real risk that you will spend the rest of your life in a government laboratory. Your family and friends have been notified of your death and your funeral happened while you were unconscious."

You feel your heart drop.

"I'm sure you have a loving new family out there, but the phone we found in your possession only contains Irina's conversations with William and information about your new college life. I will do what I can to help you adapt to being a twenty year old woman, but today is the first day of a beautiful new life for you."
