Invite Lyric to join you
"Sure, the more the merrier," you say, and Lyric's smile widens, showing perfect white teeth.
"Wonderful." She falls into step beside you as the group resumes walking, close enough that you can feel the warmth radiating from her body. It's not uncomfortable—more like standing near a fireplace on a cool evening.
The Cauldron sits tucked between the library and what appears to be a converted chapel, its exterior all weathered brick and climbing ivy. A hand-painted sign swings above the door, depicting a bubbling cauldron with steam forming the café's name. Through the windows, you can see warm golden light and students scattered at mismatched tables.
A bell chimes as Kez pushes open the door. The interior smells incredible—coffee, cinnamon, something herbal and unfamiliar but pleasant. The space is cozy and eclectic, with worn leather couches, wooden tables scarred by years of use, and shelves lined with books and odd trinkets. Behind the counter stands a woman who must be Magda—she's got greenish-gray skin, wild hair that might be some combination of moss and actual hair, and sharp intelligent eyes. She's wearing an apron that reads "Hex the Patriarchy."
"Kez! Sable!" Magda's voice is raspy but warm. "And you brought the human. Petra mentioned you'd enrolled. Welcome, sweetheart."
"Thanks," you say. "I'm Alex."
"Magda Rootwater. What can I get you? Coffee's fresh, and I just pulled cinnamon rolls from the oven."
You glance at the menu board behind her. Most items are straightforward—espresso, cappuccino, tea—but there's a section labeled "Specialty Brews" with more exotic offerings. You spot something called "Goblin's Courage" and "Moonshade Tea."
"I'll have my usual," Kez says, leaning against the counter. "And put his on my tab. Consider it a welcome gift."
"That's not necessary," you start, but Kez waves you off.
"Nonsense. First coffee on me. Besides, you're going to need the energy for today. Trust me."
Lyric orders something called a "Heartfire Latte," while Sable requests herbal tea. Thorne gets a black coffee, and Petra opts for hot chocolate.
"So what'll it be, Alex?" Magda asks, her expression kindly.
You notice Kez watching you with barely concealed interest, her yellow eyes tracking your gaze as it moves over the menu. Lyric has somehow positioned herself so she's leaning against the counter next to you, her bare shoulder almost brushing yours. The heat from her skin is more noticeable at this proximity.
"First day jitters?" Lyric asks, her voice pitched low enough that it feels intimate despite the public setting. "Or just overwhelmed by choices?"
