Indentured Servitude Plus

Will Vanessa cheerfully goes about her day, she is completely unaware of the draconian law that was just enacted. While the government claims they just updated the already established laws, many have been referring to it as Indentured Servitude Plus.

In short, slavery was brought back as a punishment, with some major distinctions. While before, such slavery was limited to those serving a prison sentence in a federal or state prison, this is a bit different. While this is still a viable punishment for government use, the major difference is it is not limited to the government. As long as it is on private property or by a private business, slavery can be used as a punishment for rule violations. There are some rules that businesses and people will have to follow to implement slavery as a punishment. Firstly, the business or citizen must have government approval of their rules/punishments before implementation. Secondly, the slavery must be proportionate to the violation and cannot be permanent. Lastly, the rules and their consequences must be easily visible to all would be violators, ensuring they understand the consequences of their actions. Other than that, the business or citizen simply needs to register their new property with the government.

While there was much outrage and protest against this decision at first, it only took a week for those protesters to vanish or give up. Vanessa would know all of this if she chose to read the letter or watch the news, but she never did. Surely she will learn about this law before she suffers the consequences, right?
