What's next?
In the Evening.
Nicole stepped through the front door, the scent of old upholstery and dust greeting her. John sat on the worn velvet sofa, the remote of a dead television clutched in his hand.
"I'm home," she murmured, sliding her heels off.
John looked up, a tired smile creasing his eyes. "How was the office?"
"Fine. Mr. Jefferson is hosting a Halloween party tomorrow night. He wants us both there."
John sat up straight, the sudden movement rattling the remote. "A party? At his place?"
"Yes."
"We have to go, Nicole. Think about it. I'm practically living in the basement. If I can get a word in with the higher-ups, maybe I can find a way back into the industry."
Nicole stared at the carpet, the memory of Jefferson's smug face flashing in her mind. "I don't know if I'm up for it."
"Come on, babe. One night of socializing. I'll dress up, we'll drink a few cocktails, and it'll be over."
"Fine," she sighed. "We'll go."
She turned away, her gaze landing on Daniel, who leaned against the doorframe of the spare room. His eyes remained sharp and expectant. Nicole stepped closer, pulling a thick envelope from her bag.
"Here," she whispered, pressing the money into his palm. "Everything you asked for."
Daniel peeked inside, a slow grin spreading across his face. "You're a lifesaver, Nic."
"Just... don't spend it all in one place."
"No promises," he chuckled, stepping back into the room. "I'm going to pack my shit. I'll be ready to move by morning."
