Chapter 22

Shut your trap, author! Write a REAL sex scene, why don’t you?
I mean, at this very moment a sex scene seems wildly inappropriate, so wait please!
“No, we don’t.” Kate said, still looking away.
Ava and Sara turned to look at her. Ava’s brows furrowed angrily.
“Yes, we do. We have to tell him, Kate! I already told you-“
She whipped around to look at Ava, her face red and her eyes watery. “That doesn’t mean anything! You tell him, and then he’s-!” She cut herself off, glancing at me.
Sara frowned. She seemed sympathetic for Kate’s frustration. “He’s what? Part of this? I think that decision has been made for him. Wouldn’t you rather he be here with us instead of-“
“Shut the hell up, both of you!” Kenzie said loudly. The pair listened, eyes fixing to the only one who had kept a calm composure the entire time.
“Michael; Ava told us about today.” She started with her rich Russian accent. “She also told us about your choice to be a hero in that moment. I want to focus on that, if you don’t mind.”
Kenzie stood up, gesturing for me to sit down. I obeyed.
They began walking back and forth in front of me and twirling hair around a finger, not looking at me.“From my understanding, you were getting us dinner when a robbery began taking place at Jenkins Pizza. Four armed men - with intensive military training and equipment, mind you - held up guns at everyone in the building. One subject by the name of Ethel, a deaf elder, was unaware of the events transpiring. One member of the robbery was going to eliminate the granny for not complying with demands. Am I correct so far? Scary stuff and all?”
“Uh… yeah, I guess. I didn’t know about the military stuff.” I responded, fidgeting slightly in my seat. I didn’t know where this was going.
“But you could assume, yes?” Kenzie’s serious demeanor was scary; I’d only seen them be bubbly and playful; and here they were, seemingly interrogating me.
“I mean… yeah. They had a lot of shit.”
“Yes: you could clearly see these weren’t men you could defend yourself against. Yet, when seeing the helpless come into the line of danger, you put yourself in harms way.”
“Uh… no, not really… I did what anyone would do.”
“But did anyone else?” They stopped pacing and looked at me, raising a brow.
“No. But I also didn’t save the kid at the counter, did I?” I winced at the memory of his body being flung.
“You can’t save everyone, Michael. You’ll learn that. All in due time, all in due time…” Kenzie stood in front of me, locking eyes. “My point is: you put your life in danger even though you believed you would die. Of course, we’re lucky enough to see you survived. According to Ava, this is because something in you has changed.”
“What? ‘Changed’?” I asked. I looked at the girls on the couch behind Kenzie. They were all staring at Kenzie in complete silence. I mean, their attention was more raptly held than a die-hard Catholic at mass. It was unnerving.
Kenzie bent down and grabbed my shoulders, pulling their face close to mine. A wild grin overtook their face.
“Yes, Michael! Changed! You are now a Changed! This is a great thing, you see! We are so lucky to have a man with your honorable intentions become one of us!” Kenzie had lost all coolness. They were now manic, talking excitedly like a kid explaining their favorite show.
One part of the rant pointed out to me. “Wait, ‘us’?”
“We are all Changed people! How very lucky we are to have met you! It’s… the chances are unmeasurable!” Kenzie let go, throwing their hands up and laughing. “THEY must be up there, watching over us!”
I noticed Ava roll her eyes at the religious reference. Sara’s focus had shifted to me, seeming nervous. Kate’s face was reddened once more, and she’d taken to looking out the window again.
Kenzie turned away from me and stared down the girls, hands on hips. “Would you like to introduce yourselves, or shall I?”
The girls looked between themselves. No one was jumping to explain what the hell was going on. Kenzie huffed. “Yeah, I figured.”
Kenzie turned back, poking their chest with a thumb with a proud grin. “While you know me as ‘Kenzie’, others know me as ‘Replica’.”
Before I could say ‘huh’, something happened. The following events transpired in less than three seconds.
Kenzie’s body started to shimmer. It was like I was squinting at them, you know? Like the fuzziness? It was that, but I wasn’t squinting.
Then, suddenly it was like I was crossing my eyes and I saw two overlapping Kenzies crossing out of each other.
The two strayed away from each other until they were completely disconnected. Then, in an instant, the fuzziness stopped. In front of me were two Kenzies; only one was stark naked. Both wore goofy grins.
Kate’s face was bright red. “K-Kenzie! He didn’t need to see that!”
As great as it was to see Kenzie’s amazing tits again, I wasn’t able to focus on them. Instead, I was wide eyed at the fucking duplication of just experienced. I was speechless, to say the least. I felt my grip tighten on the chair’s armrests.
“Go get dressed, you!” Kenzie 1 told Kenzie 2.
Kenzie 2 stuck her tongue out. “Ah, I’m sure he likes it! Maybe I’ll stay!” She gave a small cutesy pose, pushing her breasts forward some.
“You will be going!” Kate yelled. I didn’t know if she was actually angry, or just embarrassed.
Kenzie 1 put up a hand to silence Kate. “I’ll do better.” She grabbed Kenzie 2 by the nose and pulled. In a puff of smoke the copy was gone, leaving us with the proper amount of Kenzies.
Hey, I got the ‘they/them’ thing now! They were LITERALLY two people!
