I Don't Want This Day to End Yet
Continued from chapter 3:
She reaches for the test paper I've set aside, clutching it to her chest like a prized possession. There's a newfound confidence in her posture, a straightening of her shoulders that wasn't quite there before.
"A B-plus... I can't believe it. This is all thanks to you, Mr. A."
I clear away all the study materials from the table, giving her a clean workspace. I get her another muffin from the tray she brought and a fresh bottle of water.
I place the test in front of her, along with a pencil and a calculator.
"Okay, Harmony," I say, meeting her eyes with an encouraging smile. "You have one hour. Ready... begin."
She takes a deep breath, picks up her pencil, and begins.
Harmony takes a deep breath, her chest rising and falling visibly beneath her clinging sweater. She uncaps her pencil with a sense of purpose, a determined glint in her hazel eyes as she faces the test paper spread before her on my desk.
"One hour. I can do this," she murmurs to herself, more for encouragement than necessity.
Chapter 3:
With a nod in my direction, she begins, her brow furrowing in concentration as she tackles each problem methodically. Her long, slender fingers dance across the paper, filling in answers with a newfound ease and confidence born from the solid foundation I've helped her build over these past weeks.
The minutes tick by, marked by the soft scratch of pencil on paper and the occasional sip from her water bottle. I watch from my chair, pretending to grade other assignments but finding my gaze drawn back to her again and again. Occasionally, she pauses to double-check her work, her full lower lip caught between her teeth in concentration, but overall, her progress remains steady and assured.
She looks confident, working problems out, talking quietly to herself as she remembers what I've retaught her today. I can hear fragments of her whispered reminders—formulas, processes, the little mnemonics we developed together.
True to form, Harmony finishes the test just a few minutes before the hour mark. She sits back in the chair, a triumphant grin spreading across her face as she surveys her completed work. Tapping her pencil against the desk, she looks up at me, her hazel eyes shining with pride and gratitude.
"I did it, Mr. Apostasia. I actually did it."
She stands up, stretching languidly, her arms reaching toward the ceiling. Her sweater rides up slightly to reveal a strip of toned midriff, the smooth skin of her abdomen catching the afternoon light. In her excitement, she steps closer to me, her tall frame looming but somehow seeming softer, more approachable than ever before.
"Thank you so much for believing in me and helping me get to this point. I couldn't have done it without you."
I pick up the test and run it against my answer key, checking each problem carefully while she watches, biting her lower lip nervously. The tension in the small office feels palpable as I mark the final answer.
"Harmony... wow. Ninety-seven percent. Great job, kiddo!"
Harmony's face flushes with joy and relief at my praise, her eyes widening in disbelief. She clasps her hands together, practically bouncing on her toes with excitement.
"Ninety-seven percent?! Are you kidding me? That's... that's incredible!"
She laughs, the sound rich and melodious, her whole body seeming to vibrate with happiness.
"I can't believe it. An A! On a real, honest-to-goodness test!"
Impulsively, she throws her arms around me in a tight hug, her tall frame engulfing me briefly. I can feel the warmth of her body, smell the faint scent of her shampoo—something floral and sweet. Her breasts press against my chest through the thin fabric of her sweater, and I'm acutely aware of every point of contact between us.
As quickly as it begins, she pulls back, a fierce blush staining her cheeks as she realizes the intimacy of the gesture.
"S-sorry, I just got so excited. Thank you, Mr. Apostasia. Truly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything."
"It's okay, Harmony."
I pause, not wanting her to leave, but knowing her staying is probably not a great idea. The words catch in my throat as I try to find the right thing to say.
"I assume you'll be heading out...?"
I let the question hang in the air between us, leaving the decision in her hands. The ball is in her court now.
Harmony hesitates, glancing at the clock on my office wall and then back to me. There's a flicker of uncertainty in her eyes, but also a spark of something warmer, more personal. She twirls a lock of her long dark hair around her finger, a nervous habit re-emerging.
"Actually... if it's not too much trouble..."
She bites her lip, gathering her courage.
"Would you maybe want to celebrate a little? We could order a pizza, watch a movie, just... hang out. As friends, of course!"
She adds the last part hastily, a rosy blush coloring her cheeks.
"I just... I don't want this day to end yet. Not when I'm feeling so good about things. What do you say, Mr. A?"
My heart pounds in my chest. This is dangerous territory, but I find myself nodding before my better judgment can intervene.
"Okay, Harmony... if you insist. I'll order carryout. Why don't you get us a couple of drinks when we get to my place? I have water, pop, beer, and vodka if you want something stronger."
I smile shyly, knowing I'm crossing a line but unable to stop myself.
"I won't tell if you don't. Are you thinking pizza or Chinese?"
Harmony's face lights up with a delighted smile, her earlier nervousness melting away at my agreement. She nods enthusiastically at my drink suggestion.
"Vodka sounds perfect, actually. Just a small one though—I don't want to lose control of my faculties!"
She winks playfully, a rare display of flirtatiousness from the usually reserved girl.
"Hmm, pizza sounds amazing right about now. How about we do half pepperoni, half veggie? That way we both get something we like."
I agree, it does sound amazing, so I nod and smile against my better judgement. Harmony immediately starts rummaging through my fridge, her tall form bending and stretching as she searches for glasses. The movement causes her shorts to ride up slightly, revealing more of her long, athletic legs.
"And don't worry, your secret's safe with me, Mr. Apostasia."
"The vodka goes great with LaCroix on ice, Harmony. Would you make me one too, please?"
I order the pizza on my phone and walk over to the pizza parlor next door to pick it up. The evening air is cool against my face, giving me a moment to think about what I'm doing. This is my student. She's eighteen, legal, but still my student. I should send her home after we eat.
But I know I won't.
