Human Testing
“Objective: To achieve complete molecular reconfiguration,” Walter said, wiping a bit of residual grease from his palm onto his thigh. He paused, looking at the pile of discarded work clothes on the floor.
He had realized, quite late in the design phase, that fabric was a variable he couldn't afford to let the machine interpret incorrectly. If he stayed dressed, there was a non-zero chance the pad would decide his trousers were actually part of his skin or his shirt was meant to be his left arm. To ensure a clean test of human biological restructuring, he needed to be pure, unadulterated matter.
He stepped toward the pad. The surface felt strangely viscous under his bare feet, like walking on a pool of heavy, liquid mercury that somehow remained solid enough to support his weight. As he climbed onto the center of the shimmering disc, the air around him seemed to thicken with static electricity, making the hair on his arms stand on end.
He looked back at Z-0-R-T-Y, whose single optical sensor was pulsing a rhythmic, expectant blue.
"Z-0-R-T-Y," Walter said, his voice steadier than he actually felt. "Initiate sequence. Full power. Let's see if physics can handle me."
The robot’s servos whined as it processed the command. "INITIATING SEQUENCE. PREPARE FOR MOLECULAR SHIFT, MASTER WALTER. CURRENT STABILITY: OPTIMAL."
"Commence!" Walter yelled over the rising roar of the machine.
Z-0-R-T-Y’s metallic hand moved toward the primary activation lever on the control console. With a heavy, mechanical clunk, the robot pulled it down.
Suddenly, the world didn't just change; it folded.
The light from the workshop became a blinding, kaleidoscopic swirl of colors that shouldn't exist in the visible spectrum. Walter felt his body lose its solidity. It was an impossible sensation—as if he were being stretched like taffy and compressed like an accordion all at once. He wasn't just Walter Smith anymore; for a terrifying, exhilarating second, he felt himself expanding into the very concept of "man."
The sensation was an intense, itching heat—the feeling of a billion tiny hands rearranging his atoms to find the perfect fit. He tried to shout, but his voice shifted from a deep bass to a high-pitched chirp in the span of a heartbeat.
Is it supposed to feel like being turned inside out? he thought, the idea flashing through his mind with the clarity of a lightning bolt.
The pad's surface flared with a brilliant white light, swallowing him whole. The workshop, Z-0-R-T-Y, and even the concept of "solid ground" vanished into a vacuum of pure energy. For one moment, there was nothing but the Great Unknown.
Then, the sound—the roar, the whir, the hum—abruptly cut to silence.
The light dimmed, receding back into the metallic surface of the pad. The air in the garage settled, smelling faintly of ozone and something else... something like wildflowers after a summer rain.
Z-0-R-T-Y’s sensors scanned the platform, its eye blinking rapidly as it searched for a target. "SEQUENCE COMPLETE. SCANNING FOR BIOLOGICAL SIGNATURE..."
As the shimmer faded, the figure on the pad began to stabilize. It was a person, but their form seemed to flicker—a momentary blur of height and weight that refused to settle completely.
Finally, the flickering stopped and on there stood...
