Chapter 5
by CJD619
What catches his eye?
His dad moving the statue
When he turned around, the first thing Derek noticed was that his father had the dolly he had been waiting for and had started to load the marble statue, which was now encased in protective packaging, into his makeshift box truck. Of course, one man trying to lift and load a six foot marble statue by himself is near impossible. Derek stood there for awhile, enjoying the frustration that his asshole Dad was going through and wondering if he was going to ask anybody for help. "Karma." was all that was on Dereks mind. But the longer he watched, the more he realized how much older his father had gotten, and how much his physical condition aged over a short amount of time. A man who formerly prided himself on his commitment to working out, was now noticeably out of shape, struggling to catch his breath and taking a break after each failed attempt at moving the statue. Even though he knew he shouldn't, a part of Derek felt bad for him, something that he never thought would be possible. After a bunch of back and forth in his mind and knowing his stubborn dad won't ask anybody for help, he decided to give him a hand.
"If we both tilt it sideways along the edge of the floor of the truck and push it up and forward, that oughta do it." Derek said as he approached his dad, trying to ease into the situation. As he got closer, he noticed his father glaring at him, almost with a sour, rotten expression on his face. Derek couldn't tell if it was because he suggested what they should do that made him angry or that he's helping at all. Just as Derek got close, he stopped and watched his father stand up and walk over to the packed statue. When he got there, he stopped and looked back at Derek with the same expression on his face. "Are we fucking doing this or what?" His dad snarled, obviously still agitated. Derek bottled up his obvious desire to snap back at him and relented, and helped his father load the statue into the truck.
When they had finished, his father swung open the drivers side door of the truck and jumped in without saying a word. Derek turned to walk away, but some small piece of him didn't want to leave things with his father like this. He may be a complete asshole, he may not like him, but it's his dad. Memories of good times not too long ago made him feel like he should atleast try. Derek walked up to the drivers side window, and knocked. His dad turned his head and looked at him, but only for a second. "Listen, dad." Derek started, talking through the glass. "I know shit is bad between us. But I think we should at least try to not actively hate each other. Listen - there's a barbeque we're doing at the house next week an-" Derek was cut off by the sound of his father starting the engine of the truck. "Not interested." His father replied. "Are you sure? Even for just a little, I know Jade would want to see you." His dad turned his head towards Derek as soon as he heard Jade, and responded with "I'll think about it." and drove off. "I guess it's a start." Derek thought to himself. "Now what about that old lady.."
What did the elderly lady find?
