Her childhood best friend, and a nerd

"I can explain!" Kendra blurted. Something in the water splashed behind the girl, Kendra tried to crane her neck, and was met with shock when she saw a glittering pink tail fin raise up from the water.

The girl gave an amused look, "I'm sure it would be quite the story."

It was then Kendra realized she recognized the girl. "Lisa?" Lisa Hornick, captain of the cheer squad and Kendra's next door neighbor back home.

Lisa waved somewhat awkwardly to Kendra. "Heh, hey Kendra. How's college?"

Kendra just stared at the tail fin gently floating in the water behind Lisa. "You're...a mermaid?"

Lisa blushed, staring at Kendra with the same awe, "Yeah, and you're a centaur." Kendra hadn't been close friends with Lisa, they'd played a bit when they were young, but as Kendra learned what video games were, they sort of stopped talking. It was honest coincidence they'd picked the same college.

"You started to transform in the middle of class?" Kendra nodded, this had to be a dream. A mermaid. Lisa Hornick. A mermaid. "Yeah, I did too."

"How many of you are there?" The boy finally spoke up. Kendra looked over to him, getting herself up on her feet. She hadn't intended to intimidate him, but standing to her full height, well it was an easy effect to pull of. The boy pulled away from her.

"I'm as surprised as you are, Drew." Lisa said to him.

Kendra examined Drew, "Are you like me too?" She asked, confused at this whole scenario. For so long now she had been such a unique flaw in nature. Now she found a mermaid who lived next door to her, and a boy who at the very least wasn't too shocked by the mermaid in the pool.

"No," Lisa answered. "This is Drew. He walked in on me swimming. He's kind of a dork. Took him ten minutes to stop asking questions."

Drew flushed red, "I...really like mermaids." He admitted. He looked at Lisa in the pool, "This is exactly why I told you we should leave."

Lisa rolled her eyes. "Relax Drew. I know how long I need to be in this form. I'm almost done." Everyone turned their heads towards the lockers. They had all heard it clear as day as soon as Lisa had closed her mouth. A locker had slammed shut.

"Time's up Lisa." Drew said, he seemed to have a sudden boost in confidence. "I know you both just met me, Kendra you especially-so cool to meet you by the way, I have a lot of questions- but I really think you girls should trust me when I say we need to go."

Kendra nodded, she had no clue how many people were in that locker room and it was already bad enough two people knew her secret. "If you have a plan I'll answer any questions you want."

"Help Lisa out of the pool, she needs to be dried off." Drew ordered.

"I told you I can't change yet!" Lisa whined.

"I can't change back either." Kendra admitted. Without her formula she had no clue how long she would be like this.

Drew pursed his lips. "Then we have to get you out of the school."

Kendra folded her arms. "Your car can carry a centaur? I don't intend to go galloping through town. Especially not with riders."

Drew smiled, "I have a way better idea."
