He has some questions first.

"This has been great," Ross said. "But I need to know where you're from. Who made you, and why would they build a golem and send it to college?"

"It's a bit of a sad story," she told him. She sat on the bed and patted the spot next to her. He sat and she continued.

"There really was a Madison at one point," she said. "I'm sort of based on her. Her dad was a golem engineer. Her senior year of high school, the real Madison was hit by a drunk driver and died instantly."

"Oh, God," Ross said softly. "So they made you?"

"My mom was against it," she said softly. "She thought it was disrespectful to my memory. But my dad convinced her to try it."

"But if they real Madison was dead, how did they reproduce your personality?"

The golem smiled. "At the end of the day, a script is a function that maps input to output. The input is experience and the output is behavior."

"I get that," Ross said. "But how did they come up with your function?"

"It wasn't easy. They started with all records of the original - texts, voicemails, social media. Then they conducted extensive interviews. Came up with thousands of scenarios and asked my family how I'd respond."

"That's a lot of work to replicate a dead teenager," Ross said doubtfully.

"It's actually a standard procedure. I'm certainly not the first person they've done it with. It's a lot of work, but there's a process. In the end they got me."

"But they added a rule that you can't date?" Ross asked.

Madison grinned. "That's the beauty of it. My dad did, but he didn't tell my mom. He passed earlier this year, and she keeps wondering when I'm gonna bring home a boy."

"Wow," Ross said. "So what happens when your mom passes away?"

She shrugged. "I'll need a new owner. Without a person that I'm attached to, I won't have any motivation. I can react and fulfill tasks but I won't have independent motivation."

"Fortunately, I have someone in mind," she added with a wink.
