Chapter 4 by Usherbot Usherbot

What does Jerry do next?

He goes to work, but something mysterious happens

As I park in my usual spot up close to the front entrance, l lean back in my seat, praying for an easy day up front. I know it’s gonna suck, especially with the people I gotta work with, but a guy can hope, right?

But suddenly, I see a weird purple mist in the corner of my eye. It looks somewhat sparkly, and the mist is wavy like water. I turn my head and see this purple mist pooling out from the mysterious book.

“What the fu—” I say, but I’m interrupted by a sudden explosion of purple mist hitting my entire body! I can feel it travel through my lungs and out of my mouth like heavy air. I cough incessantly and wave my hand around to get the smoke out of my face.

With my eyes closed, I manage to open the windows of my car, letting all the excess smoke and mist out. I cough some more and take in a couple deep breaths before staring at the book once more, purple mist still flooding out of its pages.

But somehow it gets even weirder! In front of my eyes, I see that most of the smoke takes form into what looks like a person! It is vaguely human shaped arms, torso, and a head full of hair, but no legs.

After a couple seconds, the mist takes shape into what looks like a woman with long locks of hair, a big chest, and a bit of a tummy. It lays motionless for a second except bits of smoke flying off of its figure. But then it opens its dark green eyes and stares at me.

“Awwwwwwwwwhhhh~ It’s been so long since I’ve been released from my tome. Now who’s the dashing young man that summons me?” The ghost like figure says to me in a deep, sensual voice.

“W-What are you?! Pl-pl-please don’t-t hurt me…” I say in a panic as I move further away from the creature.

The thing looks like it pouts at me as I struggle to open and leave my car. She slowly moves toward me in a fluid manner, flying all around me and touching my arms and thighs with her smoke hands. The feeling is weird as smoke and mist glides against my skin and clothes, giving me goosebumps.

“I promise I won’t hurt you…” She whispers into my ear.

“Okay… B-But what are you?” I ask.

“I’m so glad you asked! My name is Elizabeth Aldrich, Grand Wizard of the Kingdom of Brihthere! And it seems you not only found my magic tome, but have released my spirit as well,” Elizabeth explains.

“Wizard? Kingdom? Magic? Spirits?! This has to be a joke, right? This is just some prank some magician is pulling on me, huh?” I say in disbelief. No way any of this is real, right?

“I’m afraid that you’re wrong, young man. I’m as real as it gets!”

“B-But how did I summon you? A-And you said you’re a spirit, right? None of this is making any sense!” I exclaim. I must seem like a crazy person to anyone walking by hearing me say this.

“You see, us Wizards live for a long time, but even we have to die at some point! So, I transferred my soul into my tome of magic spells to partially stay in the land of the living! Over hundreds of years, I have been passed down by generations of fantastic Wizards, but somehow I was stolen and sold to your parents 40 years ago,” Elizabeth explains, her tone saddened as she finished her sentence.

“S-So you’ve been in my parents attic for 40 years? Why is this the first time I’ve seen you though?” I ask.

“I’ve been desperately trying to talk to you and your parents for years, but when you opened me yesterday, part of my soul leaked through! And with the tome being opened next to you for so long, my soul has finally been released!” Elizabeth explains.

This feels so unreal. No way is there a hundreds year old Wizard’s soul speaking to me right now! This is something straight out of a fantasy novel. I honestly feel a bit sick to my stomach knowing everything I was taught in school was a lie. But I’m still a bit skeptical.

“But now that I’m free! I must reward you!” Elizabeth says as she circles around me, tickling the bridge of my nose.

“What exactly is this reward?” I ask, still confused and a bit dazed.

“I will grant you the ability to learn all the spells in my tome! You can cast spells of pure destruction, or spells of divine healing. Either to help the world, or yourself… it’s your choice,” Elizabeth says, electricity swirling her ghostly body.

“Wait!? You will give me magic powers? Yeah right, I call bull on that. There’s one thing being a spirit, but there’s no way you can actually do that kind of magic!” I say, very skeptical of her offer.

She pouts again, placing her finger to her chin as she looks like she’s thinking of something. After a couple of seconds, it seems she has an idea to convince me.

“Oh! Ahem… Contrarium Depravatione!” She shouts aloud in a language I’m 50% sure is Latin.

Swirls of electricity and purple smoke form around her and my car. I feel my car shaking violently from side to side, so I hurriedly open my car door and step out as I watch what happens.

Slowly, every inch of my car looks to age backwards. Chipped paint forms new paint, looking brand new! The rust around the hood and sides of the car disappear in seconds. Broken or missing parts magically appear out of nowhere! Only after a couple seconds, and my car looks like I drove it out the lot back in the 80’s before I was born!

“Holy Shit! You fixed my car!” I exclaim, hands on my head as I stand in disbelief and joy.

Elizabeth flies out of my car and floats in front of me. “Yes, and you can do this and so much more! All you have to do is read out the first spell in the tome,” Elizabeth explains.

Excited and a bit overwhelmed, I rush to my car to grab the book. Even on the inside, my car looks brand new, without any torn fabrics and run down metal and plastic. But before I can touch the book, I feel someone pull me out of my car by my collar.

“What the hell are you doing, Jerry Myers!?” My boss yells at me.

My boss, Greg B. Benjamin, or Mr. Benjamin as he likes to be called, is an older guy, in his mid to later 40’s. He has a short, shape haircut with a greying thick mustache. He’s a head taller than me, being 6’3’’ compared to my height of 5’10’’. He’s very rude and overbearing, always expecting the world and more out of every employee, myself especially.

“N-Nothing Sir! I was just getting out of my car!” I lie, sweat falling down my brow as his hand grips tighter around my collar.

“Bullshit! I saw you standing around in the parking lot, looking like a damn fool as I left the store. Mind telling me why you’re out here and not working, Mr. Myers?” He asked in his deep, aggressive voice.

“D-Don’t you see the flying ghost lady! She just fixed my car a couple seconds ago, and—”

“Stop fucking with me, Myers! I don’t see any ghosts around here except the ghost of your determination to work!” He replies.

“B-But look, behind you!” I say as I point towards Elizabeth, who looks a bit concerned.

My boss looks behind me, and as he does I can see his veins popping out of his head in anger.

“The heat is making you crazy, boy!” He says before grabbing my hand and dragging me up to the store entrance. Confused, I look back at Elizabeth who is just floating in front of my car. I feel a bit bad that our first meeting was cut so short, but I guess I have a job to do first.

How is work?
